I have had my 14 month old gsd on a raw diet for about 3-4 months now exclusively, but I noticed her fur does not look as nice as it was before. Could her coat be going through a fall out phase? She has been biting some fur off her thighs and side and her coat seems to be oily compared to my other gsd who is on Chicken Soup kibble, her fur is thick and soft but she does still get a doggy smell. I also give her vitamin e, c and add Salmon oil to her food. I'm wondering is the salmon oil is making her fur oily? If anyone has any suggestions on why I'm not seeing the results I want please advise. Thanks.

You didn't happen to get a rabies vaccination recently, did you?
That's what preceded my dog's hair pulling of the groin/thigh area. It was a delayed reaction of a couple weeks.
Since my dog was originally weaned onto raw food, that certainly didn't cause it.
Course, nothing says you have your diet appropriatly balanced either. You'll need to be a little more precise by what you mean by raw.

She had her rabies vaccination a longtime ago, so that is most likely not the cause.
By feeding her raw I meant that I give her chicken thighs, necks, back, gizzards, hearts and also turkey necks, legs. She gets a raw egg with shell a few times a week and I also add alfalfa and kelp powder two times a week to her meals. I also give her mashed up veggies like carrots, celery, cranberries, bananas, apples, spinach, broccili, grean beans; pretty much whatever I have in the fridge to mash up but I only give her a little compared to the weight of the meat and bone. I give her an average of 2 lbs a day of raw meat and bones.
PS - She is 80 lbs and lean.

Sounds like it might be a yeast overgrowth. Smell, biting at fur, greasiness.........
I have never seen that on a raw-fed dog. She doesn't eat a lot of grain treats or anything, right?

Could it be too much salmon oil also, as far as the oiliness is concerned?

Hi Connie,
My 14 month old doesn't stink, it's the older dog that gets the doggy smell from being on kibble. She if anything smells like corn chips. I do give her Dr's Foster and Smith Charcoal and Mint Bite Size treats as rewards throughout the day. I was only giving her these because I bought 20lbs of them and need to get rid of them, but I can always stop using them and give them away.
This week I cut back to 1 pump of the salmon oil per meal instead of 2 just to see if it reduces the oil in her fur, but I may have to bathe her this weekend to see if the cutting back of the salmon oil has helped. I typically only bathe her every few months.

Sandy,
I was wondering if the salmon oil is too much for her, I give her 2 pumps per meal since she is 80 lbs. The oilyness of her fur may be what's irritating her skin so she bites it, I think.

I think that I would faint if that turned out to be the cause. I don't think that much salmon oil would cause oily skin or fur and I don't think oily skin would cause irritation - unless it was that greasiness/waxiness from a yeast overgrowth.
Will you post back after the decreased oil, the bath and the results? I'm really curious.
That doesn't sound like a lot of salmon oil at all, but maybe a pump is more than I think. Mine isn't a pump. I give a gram for 10 pounds of dog weight, so about 1.5 teaspoons for an 80-pound dog. Can you pump it into a measuring spoon and see? Or do you know how much is in a pump?

Connie,
I'll post back here later about the measurement of one pump of the Salmon Oil today when she has dinner. I won't be able to bathe her till the weekend (most likely anyway). If it is a yeast problem I would be very surprised since she has no funky smell to her at all. I have noticed a lot of her undercoat is coming out in her kennel too, I have to clean out her kennel everyday from the amount of fur in there and around her crate.

I would be too, with no smell. But hair coming out and biting at fur....... Parasites, maybe?
