I'll try to keep this short. Was socializing my new puppy today at 7-11. A woman comes out walking our way. My boy sees her and goes her way, loking adorable as he takes after his daddy(me)LOL. She gets up to us and reaches down to him over the top of his head. I tell her please no petting. She says why what is he doing? I tell her we are socializing and he is a possible ppd and don't want him to be petted. She than says I am a dog trainer but just do obedience. After she leaves I think to myself a dog trainer who first does not ask handler if dog can be petted and than comes over the top of dogs head???? Is it just me that thinks this was all wrong on her part to do? Anyway the rest went very well today. Day two there and he paid little attention to the cars on very busy road and did very well around all people. He is a n eight week old Mali.

She said she was a dog trainer... Not that she was a GOOD dog traier! She was probably just being friendly. Who knows, if you're as cute as you think you are she might have been trying to see if there coulda been something there... LOL
Seriously though, if you don't want people to pet your pup, don't let him approach. Either you're socializing him to people or you're neutralizing him (in which case you should be teaching the pup to work around people, and more or less ignore them).
You're gonna have trouble if you allow the pup to approach people but don't let them pet him, hehe! What I do when I am neutralizing a pup is condition them with either food or tug (usually tug if it's more motivating) and then whenever a person appears, I immediately reward. This has the effect of creating a dog that, when people are around, is focused on me rather than them.
In general, I feel that if you have a pup that you are NEUTRALIZING, but you let him approach people, all you do is build frustration. And the odd time he does get attention and is rewarded (like in this case) it strengthens the behaviour. In short order you have an obsessively wagging dog that convulses in fits of glee whenever a person appears, because one time out of 20 he is rewarded for the behaviour.
If you are WORKING with the dog, I find people generally leave him alone. This is probably as much about controlling the people (stopping them from petting your pup) as it is about controlling the dog.

You know what they say: a puppy is a great way to "meet " people and a good conversation piece maybe she was trying the old "oh how cute is this puppy" but really was looking at you
Who know Mitch, maybe your pup is irresistable to anyone including trainers
And like Judy says ,"where are the photos?"

Well put Angelique!
Mike: find some kid and get him to show you how to post pictures. It'll go quicker than you trying to figure it out
I understand how you feel though; people always seem to try and pet my pup on his head and he hates that. If people show him their hand, he sniffs. If they give him a quick pat on the chest, he tolerates it. If they bend over him (while staring in his eyes of course), he gets his hackles up and barks.
Can't blame him either... now I just ask everyone not to pet him. They can come up and talk to me, but no leaning over the dog. I prefer not to get into yelling matches, so if the person ignores my request with some stupid line ("relax, I know dogs and they like me" or "puppies need to be socialized"), I just quietly step in between them and my pup.
So far no one's gone as far as shoving me out of the way to grab my pup

Anyone who has taught their dog to sit for a hotdog thinks they are "dog trainer" now days...
I ran into some lady with a bloodhound from a BYB letting her dog try to jump on my 1 year old kid- saying she was a "dog trainer". There were absolutely no sign of that! I should have asked her to come to my training classes where her dog could really learn some manners. lol!
Mitch, I understand the frustration. Good luck with the pup! Oh yeah- Show us the PICTURES!
