Does anyone know where I can purchase some scent tape? I trained with a group last year that used a blaze orange colored scent tape which held drug odor but can not locate it on the web.
It is just like regular tape, sticky on one side and not on the other. It was used under door edges and in tight spaces where a narc bag is to thick. This tape must have been someones idea and not a purchased product.
I searched for this out of curiosity and it does sound like it's regular tape with either the scent applied to the sticky side or the entire roll put in scent.
However, there was a funny comment saying that they used a new roll every session so the dog wasn't hitting on the scent of the tape or the previous dog's slobber. (Why a whole roll - not just a new piece? Can't the dog smell the glue even if it's a "new roll?")
Regular tape could be used but then "clean" tape would also need to be used so the dog doesn't learn to hit on the scent of the glues in the tape - correct?
I was at a narcotics workshop in WV a few years ago that used post-it-notes for the same effect as your tape. It's just a matter of saturating the object with drug odor... ie storing it in the same box for a period of time.
I think Hornbecks sells scented towels... maybe they would do tape for you.
We do document a residual odor respons. We just use a piece of paper that has been kept in a can of drugs. I use it each year during certification. We also conduct negative tests each year during certification. this year it's mustard powder and plastic bags. I just don't see the purpose of routinely training dogs on residual odor.

Is there a definition of "residual" is it parts per million or billion??
odor is odor in my book I cannot measure the ppm that my dog just responded to nor can I measure the ppm that is exuding from the packaging or what is available to the dog at the time the area was sniffed by the dog.
That said I avoid very small amounts of substance during regular maintenence training for most of the dogs. I don't really know if it helps but I want to avoid a bunch of indications on hypothetical residual amounts.
Kevin, it isn't about science. It's about testing, documenting and testifying in court. Labratories can detect the residual, we know the dogs can detect residual. when I worked in the research lab, that was important to me. As a trainer, it's only important to document the dog will. It's the only reason I conduct the testing in the first place. My last two trips to federal court the defense had a "canine expert". A different expert each time. Both asked basically the same questions. One was, how did I know the dog would detect residual odor. The second was did we conduct negative tests. As far as knowing whether or not a dog will hit residual, of course. Being able to show the documentation stops a lot of the questions.
