I have a 11mo male rescue...Had him about 3 weeks now, working on obed. and doing fairly well. Problem is, he is still jumping and nipping my sleeves....I do intend on him being a PPD and dont want him to NEVER jump on someone, coz later on, my brotherinlaw is going to put the bite suit on, and I will need him to go for it.
I do not feel comfortable about teaching him to put paws up when told....Is this the BEST way to teach when is proper and not??
He seems very Hard on this...all the correction in the world has not stopped him from jumping, then he starts nipping at my sleeve. I have lifted him up on regular choke chain, and he still goes for it...I have prong collar, put have to take off at nite, and the next am, is when he does all this stuff. I cant even get collar on without a fight in the am now.
What to do?????
Next, when I am playing with him, he takes toys off to his side of area, and drops, then guards if I try to pick up??
What should I do about that????

Re: Toy guarding.
Put the dog or the toy (or both) on a leash. Switch that tennis ball for a ball on a string (like the Orbee ball that Leerburg sells). Extra bonus: it smells minty and the drool washes off easily.
Re: Collar difficulties in the morning.
Mix it up. Put up a gate, let him out of the crate and leave the room for 5 minutes. Feed him (if he eats in the AM). Then go back to put a leash on. First, slide a slip lead over his head. Now that you have some measure of control, put the collar you want to use on him. Give a treat.
It sounds like you need to practice the "5-minute rule." When you come home, when your dog is let out of the crate etc, actively ignore your dog for at least 5 minutes.

I train my dogs that "off" is REALLY FUN! Right now, save your best treats and toys for "off." He jumps up, you say "off" and chuck the toy or treat. Once he gets the idea, it's important that you wait for him to get his paws off of you before tossing that reward. You don't want him to think "If I jump on her I get an awesome toy!" You want him to think "If I put my paws on the floor, I get an awesome toy!"

Great idea about teaching "off" Anne. Now I have two choices, the other of which was also posted here.
He stated that you put the treat in your hand and just wait until you dog gives up and backs off from your hand. As soon as he is off your hand, you say off and offer the treat.
But I think I like yours better. :-) As this way the dog isn't coming back to your hand to eat after he has completed his "off".

Any ideas on the guarding of toys???Once I have thrown the toy. sometimes he walks it over to his spot and guard and tries to bite if I take toy...I have not been teaching him OUT/Slip yet, just now find out it was ok to play tug. so doing that cautiously and not outting/slipping yet. My dog is trained in Danish so different commands than the ones you guys use...
I have held him by collar and reached for toy...he still tries to go after it....

Denise,
Make sure you have 2 toys, and that you always have one of them.
You can present the other toy in order to get the first one...or you can make him sit/down to give you a chance to get the other toy away from him. This way, if he already knows sit or down, but breaks that to retain ownership of the toy, you can correct him for not sitting or downing. You cannot correct him for not outing yet, as he does not know the command.
Also, make sure, at all times, when you reward him in OB, you present the toy for his reward vs. him just grabbing it whenevr he feels like it. Remember all of the toys are YOURS, you just let him play with them occasionally.

I am also going back to kenneling until I say we come out...I have only had him about 3 weeks, and maybe I put too much on him, letting him have his side of the yard too soon. Maybe he doesnt respect me as alpha, so I will go back to basics and take a little more time before I give him so much freedom.
