I pick up my new puppy Friday at eight weeks. The breeder has give the puppy some of it's first shots. Should I continue with the shots or stop them now? I am concerned about the MLV vaccines. I want whats best for my puppy. I have read a lot about the vaccines and will not give the boosters, but I am confused about the first shots.
Please guys I need help.
Chuck
I would definitely get the first whole series! Yes, your pup may feel under the weather, may not need them, etc. But boy it stinks to lose a nice pup to parvo or distemper-or, god forbid, rabies.
When the dog is older, you can use your own best judgement. There are people on the board who don't like yearly vacs, and my own vet thinks dogs don't need them either. But see how welcome you and your pooch are at most training facilities, clubs, and kennels without them. It's a serious consideration if you plan to take trips, train with SAR or some schutzhund clubs, probably any AKC affliated club, etc.
I would skip bordatella unless you have to have it for some reason like what I just mentioned...everytime my dogs get it they sniffle for days-and they're grown.
Just my thoughts-I'm sure other dog people have more to say on this.
So much depends on your diet, where you live etc. I did not give any vaccinations to my now almost 3 yr. old pup. Took him EVERYWHERE with me right from the beginning. I did a titer on him at a yr. for distemper and parvo. He had a good titer to both. (obviously came into contact with them in his environment and developed a natural immunity to them). My now 6 month old pup had puppy shots at 8 wks and I beleive 12 wks. but has had nothing since. She is very healthy as well. (my dogs are all raw fed and have been for over 8 yrs).
IF you wanted to go a route where you feel O.K. about things (not ready to do the no vaccine route) and/or you will need your dog to be vaccinated for the above mentioned reasons, the ONLY vaccines I would continue to give are parvo and distemper. I would wait 4 wks and give a single vaccine of parvo. I would then wait another 4 wks. and give a single dose of distemper. That would be it. Your dog should have adequate immunity to both of these (only things I would even consider vaccinating for) at that point. If you are still feeling uneasy, then I would recommend a titer at 6 months of age.
