I'm going to start raw next week and was wondering what everyone fed the 1st week? I'm trying to keep things very simple to start (I'm not kitchen saavy at all hehe). If you dont' remember, what WOULD you feed the 1st week? Thanks!

Fed chicken backs and necks and a little ground turkey. Added fish oil and a Vitamin E gelcap. Added a small amount of liver about midweek. Didn't know about other probiotics products but did use a little plain unsweetened live-culture yogurt.
Added each additional item one at a time over the next weeks.

I think my dog will handle the switch better than me! I don't cook at all. Should I still trim the skin and fat?
So far I was planning on starting off with chicken leg quaters, a raw egg w/shell(3xwk), salmon oil, vitamin E, & yogurt (every other morning). I can probably toss some canned mackrel or sardines by the end of the week too. I figured she eats the same now everyday, so if she is on only leg quaters for the 1st week or 2, she'll do well. Then, I can add more muscle meat, organ meat & decrease the leg quaters...Does that sound right?

I probably would not start with weight-bearing bones; I don't even give them (except ground up).
Backs and/or necks are great, partly because they are so cartilage-y and soft.

Thanks Connie, I'll change to the backs & necks. Does the rest sound like I have it right? It's a bit confusing, but I'm trying. Thanks

here's the protocol my mentor gave me for switching over:
1. fast the dog for 24 hours. always have plenty of fresh, clean water available.
2. for the first three days, feed only raw chicken necks with all skin and fat removed (they can cause tummy upsets).
3. if the dog is handling the chicken necks well, you can GRADUALLY start adding other foods. the next thing to feed would be plain, nonfat yogurt and a whole egg with ground up shell, or cottage cheese and egg.
4. then you might try some beef ribs or neck, a pork neck, a turkey neck or wing.
5. if after a week the dog is still doing fine, you can gradually start allowing the dog to have chicken skin and fat.
i think eggs and yogurt three times a week is a bit much. and i would not feed chicken legs at all. feed whole young fryers, or if that is too much food, cut them in half.

Whole Dog Journal:
The April issue (which came today) has a lead story on raw feeding. There's no way they knew about the recall when they prepared the issue, but what timing!
It's a terrific article; it just about mirrors the Leerburg Q&A about raw feeding.
I really like this publication.
P.S. There's even a sidebar about the dehydrated foods option and adding RMBs to them..... and they call THK "a super-premium example" of dehydrated foods.
