I have a 2.5 yr male chow, usually on the dominant dog forum. When he alerts to something and goes to investigate, he huffs allot. I don't think he's out of breathe, it seems as if he's warning whatever may be around that he's coming or maybe a show of power or "no fear" or something. Last night we were in the yard and I heard large animals moving in the woods. He came trotting around huffing with every step and running all around. Very attentive, head up, it was pretty cool, I just wonder what is he doing or what does it mean.
I don't know whether Chows are barkers or huffers but it sounds like he is barking in his way...the huffing sounds to me like he's saying "don't mess with me and mine".
