Ok, been looking at different kibble dog foods for my GSD. Should I be feeding him large breed puppy food or just regular puppy food? During reading, It seems I am getting conflicting messages.

Chris, if you are going to feed kibble over raw, I would'nt feed any brand that sells "breed" food. I would recommend Canidae. I have been feeding my dog that for the last year and it's one of the best kibbles you can feed. The price is probaly the best also. I am now switching my dog to raw, but Canidae is really a great kibble. http://www.canidae.com/ They have an all-life stages food which makes sense, animals in the wild don't eat puppy or size specific food so there is no reason to feed that to your dog.

I have looked at the site posted. I was considering using chicken soup, innova, or canidae. I have looked for the availablity of these dog foods locally and it seems the only thing I can find is chicken soup. I've read around and seems to be on high end of kibble food. So, I think I'm going to go with this for now! I just don't know if I should get the large breed puppy or regular puppy.
I did think about the raw diet and will probably add it in eventually. Pressure will cave me in, and I will be converted

I have always fed puppy food, regardless of breed (tried large breed and never really figured out the difference) and I switch them over to adult food at about 6 or 7 months.

Chris, chicken soup is a good food. I fed one bag of it, but my dog lost interest and I have heard the same from others. Give it a try though. Also, if you want to find a local canidae supplier, you can go to store locator and type in your zip. Maybe that should help.

I have also had excellent results with Innova, if that wind up being something you can get. I did feed the Large Breed Puppy food, but there are lots of people who say it doesn't really matter.
I'm switching to raw now...not because I don't like Innova, but because I really think that raw will be best for my dogs.
Good luck.

I did all the find a retailer searches in my area with no luck. My only option is to order it online. I did find the chicken soup and I guess it is just the convenience factor of being able to go down the road and get some vs. waiting for it to be delivered.

Chris, I have been using chicken soup for about 3 years. I started all of my pups on the adult dog formula immediately. The nice thing I noticed was that they did grow too fast. Puppies I had previously fed something else would hit a sudden growth spurt. When I switched to chicken soup the growth spurts stopped. They seemed to grow more slowly and from what i have researched that is better for healthy bone development. Good luck

Chuck, thanks for the info on chicken soup. I picked up some today. After reading up, I kind of have the same idea as you. By using the large breed you are kind of speeding up their growth. I also talked to one of the local pet stores and he said he was trying to get canidae. So, I'll probably switch them out, until the peer pressure of feeding raw food gets to me. Thanks for the help everyone.
