today, I was playing with my 9 week old puppy and it started SCREAMING when I rubbed it's back and scratched it's belly and refused to stay on my lap and I had to force it to stay and play. I know that it's in it's fear stage, but golly, I hope this doesnt last it's whole life. I have no idea what freaked him out so much. Should I just ignore it and make him keep playing like normal? I cannot even fathom having a dog that doesn't like being petted.

Update....We just went out to go potty and he started plying so I turned him on his back and started tickling him and he went WILD. I dont know if he was playing or being agressive. But everytime after that I reached out to pet him, especially his head he pulled away. I am bewildered.

I do not know how you are playing with him, but maybe you got a little too rough with him???
He is pretty young to be rough housing with.
Does he like to tug at all?
Maybe roll a soft kitchen towel and tape the ends and tug a bit with him. Not roughly, just nice and easy and make sure to let him win the toy so it builds his confidence.
When you (not him) are done playing, then put the tug up.
Screaming is often a sound for pain, so maybe something, somewhere hurt him and now he may associate you with it.
ok jonathon, he's a PUPPY--he won't like being a lap-dog until he's at least 5 yrs old (if you're lucky). not to be too mean, but are you actually turning him on his back and scratching his belly while rubbing his back? and you think he should LIKE it???
listen to carol, and if you want something you can roll over, scratch and tickle all at the same time WITHOUT screaming, get a stuffed animal, not a live one.
if nothing else, PLEASE read this forum, and treat your pup like a baby, which he IS--not a full grown human something..

no no, I was scratching his belly, and he screamed, and then I let him roll back over and THEN tried to (gently) scratch his back. not at the same time though. we found out what the problem was though. I think he is bloate dor constipated cause he cried going #2. He is absolutesly fine now, and even turns over to have his bell rubbed.
