Since Caesar's been having really bad stomach issues (finally finally finally found what was the cause) I've been thinking about taking him to Honest Kitchen once he gets better because it's better balanced than what I could provide. I just wanted to know what are the weakness/strengths of Honest Kitchen versus RAW food. What am I gaining and what am I losing by switching over? Thanks for all the help!

I'm no expert, but FWIW, I would still add in RMB's for the teeth cleaning. Please don't get me wrong, THK is GREAT, but crunchin' bones and tearing meat are what keeps teeth clean.
My dog got sick and I fed THK while he healed up. Dog breath came on pretty quick. Maybe it was just my dog, but I'm pretty sure soft food alone can't clean teeth and gums.
What did you find to be the cause of your pups stomach issues?

It was a bacterial infection, something that started with a "P". It had a really long name that I can't remember. Reluctantly I had to use antibiotics, but they are working great. I'm giving caesar some yogurt to keep him going.
As far as bones and meat, I'd figure an occasional knuckle bone would keep his teeth pretty clean. Do they really get bad breath from honest kitchen? I thought THK was pretty much raw food?

http://www.leerburg.com/honestkitchen.htm#facts
this explains the dehydration process of HK.
It is 'considered' raw by the manufacturer, but they do heat the meat to 120 degrees when dehydrating it so I am not sure I consider that to be RAW.
We don't ever feed THK as a stand alone diet, it's just a part of the feeding plan here. The foundation of the meals for our dogs here is RMBs, meat, organs and eggs with HK as a part of that diet. (probably 25 to 50%, depending on the dog)

I fed THK with raw ground beef added in as a stand alone diet for quite a while with good results. Never was too crazy about feeding carnivore's what is essentially oatmeal (texture-wise). I switched to Natures Variety meat patties for a long time after that, then found a place in town where I could order chicken backs and necks etc very easily and at less than 1/4 of the price that THK or NV was costing me. My picky eater surprised the heck outta me when he ate a chicken back, so for the past 4 weeks or so I've been doing raw-raw. Actually today I'm off to buy about 120lbs of meat It's still cool to me to see my dogs go at a chicken back, never thought my GSD would take to it, I thought he'd cost me an arm and a leg for prepackaged raw food for the rest of his life!

I feed THK with meat add ins and have found it to be a good segue from a purely kibble person to a raw based diet. Eventually I figure that I will get more comfortable and go completely raw but right now I do not have the time to learn about all the supplements and veggies necessary to make a complete diet. My male is around 60 pounds and he gets 3/4 of a cup of THK in the morning and than about a pound to a pound and a half of chicken wings or some other similar meat.

My biggest fear is that I won't have a balanced RAW diet, and the dog will be malnutritioned. I bought that nutrition book that is always recommended on the leerburg website, and I hope that's going to be enough to help me. If I can figure out a balanced way to feed my dog, I will never switch him from RAW. I've seen too many good things to want to switch him over.

If you read these, you could feed raw by starting off with one of those LB "sample menus"...... very easy, very inexpensive, and a great immediate start, IMO.

P.S. I agree 100% that THK with RMBs/meat is a great segue (or permanent food, with RMBs/meat). I think it's a very good product.
It's the only commercial food in my house. :>
(It does need fish oil supplemented, like all commercial or fresh diets, IMO.)

My 2 cents... Dogs do not need a "balanced" diet. Dogs are carnivores and occasionally scavengers. Their whole diet is based on meat and bones (organs included). On the other hand, we're omnivores. We eat everything, therefore WE need a balanced diet. "Balance" in a diet is a concept coined by humans and has no place in the world of carnivores. Just look at wolves, dingos, lions, etc.
