I was told by my groomer who has raised german shepherds, as well as other dogs, for several years to put my pregnant female on puppy food because she will need the higher fat content. I have never heard of this and was wanting to know if this was true. I do not know if it makes a difference but I feed my dogs chicken soup for the dog lovers soul. Another question. I have researched raw and intend to switch my dogs but read not to switch a pregnant female until she had whelped the litter. I would also welcome advice about switching to raw during pregnancy also.

I would switch her to RAW....hee hee but I would switch everything to Raw
Seriously, I am confident enough to answer about Raw and a pregnant bitch yet but am researching it as I am interested in this thread, as my Mal will be bred next year and she is already on Raw.
I think that pregnancy and adult kibble is okay as long as she is getting enough, but know people who have switched to puppy food in the last 30 days or so and then continued it until the pups were ready to wean......not sure if that is correct or not.
I have Chicken Soup here also for a dog that is training and she does really well on it. Owner does not want to go Raw and at least she is buying "good" kibble.
I am sorry I could not help a whole lot but you should get some great advice here.....
Until The Tale of the Lioness is told, the Story will Always Glorfy the Hunter
I bred GSD's for several years and always fed my girls a raw diet during pregnancy. They had healthy pregnancies and fat, healthy litters on raw. They were not fed all raw while not pregnant (they were fed a combination of high quality kibble and raw) and the switch to all raw while pregnant never caused a problem. They seemed to crave the all raw while pregnant. My vet always had a hissy but the proof was in the pudding, so to speak.
I have two books on feeding raw and they both have sections about feeding pregnant females. There is also one of the honest kitchen foods (embark, I think) that is recommended for pregnant females. I feed both raw and Honest Kitchen to my dog now (like they do at Leerburg) and Cindy may have some advice on this part of the website if you want to check it out. The books are also listed on this page.
