Hey all,
I have to share this. I cannot say much about right now BUT, I was called out by the US Marshals office yesterday to trail a suspect/fugitive that had run after a vehicle "chase".
Trail was two hours or more old by the time I arrived on scene, I gathered my scent articles and asked a few important questions and Max and I set off.
About a half hour later Max found him. YAY!!!!
I had to say that. Besides getting accurate direction of travel with that dog on some other real searches, this is my first "find".
He had half a chicken and his favorite banana yogurt last night.
Want to add that this is what we train for and it makes ALL the blood, sweat and tears WELL worth it!!

I LOVE hearing this stuff!
Trail 2 hours old!!
1/2 hour of constant searching, yahoo Max for your persistence!!
I don't know much about searches, but that sounds very accomplished. BIG congratulations Carol and Max! I would love to have been there. Do the cops follow you around as Max searches? I would imagine they do, in case of a find?

Congratulations Carol – and to Max also. For those of us who aren’t involved in or even familiar with your work, we can only imagine how you must be feeling. Hats off to you, and Beau and Chance send some of their newly-tried (now ‘bestest favorite treat’ ) blueberries to Max.
As you think, so shall you be. |

I take my own flanker with me and LE also followed.
What was great was that the area had been totally contaminated by the officers walking through the area over the top of the suspects trail....
We have actually done a 20+ hour old wilderness trail before with three fresh crosstracks, just to see if he could do it. And he did it, though he worked hard at it.

Thanks you guys,
I am pretty damn proud of that dog!!
I pretty much consider myself the "dummy at the end of the lead". He does the work and I have to make sure I read him correctly to be a reliable resource.

It all just blows me away. Since I was a kid, the scenting capabilities of dogs has been one of the things I love most about them. You'd think I was a dog, with the pride I feel about their noses - LOL.
A question: is your flanker an LE also, or civilian with a gun? Same flanker each search, on call?

A question: is your flanker an LE also, or civilian with a gun? Same flanker each search, on call?
I have three trained flankers (in case one is unavailable) that are Fire Dept. but carry a concealed weapons permits and allowed to carry on searches. My state dog team members, as well as myself, also train how to be flankers. I am reserve LE so I am armed as well.
I have always told the requesting agency that when a find is made I will back out with my dog (keeping an eye on the suspect) and motion to them that they need to step up. I do this before we start and I make sure everyone is on the same page.
I am armed more for big cats and loose aggressive dogs, but if I have let go of my lead and utilize my weapon I will.
Flankers are armed for the same reason.
If LE refuses (which has never happened) to follow, I refuse the search. I am watching and reading my dog and doing my best to watch my surroundings as well, but this is why I train my flankers to be my "eyes and ears" so to speak.
With my airscent and cadaver dogs it is a little different, although my flankers still go with me.
