We don't allow our animals up on beds or on couches...however, when we are gone, my lab will jump up on my living room couch to see out the window. Especially, if someone rings the doorbell.
This makes for a mess in my living room. Pillows all over the floor and sometimes when it's muddy outside due to sprinklers or something he will get mud all over my pillows and couch. Anyone have any ideas on how to keep him off the thing even when I'm not home???
Some dogs do not like the feeling or noise of paws on a blue tarp material. You could cover the seating cushions with it until he learns to stay off, but once it comes off, he might get back up there too. Booby-trap it so it sets off some mousetraps (safely) for noise or put rattler cats (soda filled with coins) or some other starttling noise maker the dog won't want to experience more than once. The jump up sets it off and he won't want to keep getting up there.
Just some ideas...

Is there some way you can cover the window to lessen the temptation, like shades or something? I've found that lots of pillows on the couch keeps my GSD off, but then again, she's just trying to curl up for a nap, not look out a window.
Try buying a section of clear plastic carpet runner, the kind with the nubs on the bottom to keep it from sliding on the carpet. Turn the runner upside down so the nubs are up and place it on the couch. It should make it uncomfortable for him without any injury, and that should keep him from getting up on the couch.
Robbin,
We had that same problem several years with our pitbull Buster. He was jumping up on a wooden coffee table to took out the front window, leaving scratches all over it. My husband made him a "window seat" with two steps to go up to the height of the window and covered it with carpet so it was not slippery. He really loved it and would spend hours sitting or lying on it. You can see a picture of Buster on his window seat on my link below (the picture is toward the bottom of the first page).
