Then one thing that I would watch out for is cholesterol. The reason I say this is my dog has recently developed cholesterol deposits on his eyes and egg yolks have a lot of cholesterol. It is not suppose to impair his vision but now I watch his fat intake even though his blood work came back normal and he is a lean dog. Just food for thought (no pun intended)
Hey Milt - don't be so cheap. Give your dog the whole egg. They are cheap :-)
All of my dogs get an egg a day in with their meat (I feed the shell and all - roughage) It all works and I do not feel that there is any problem. But then I ate eggs foir breakfast every day for years when the news told of the concern over cholesterol (only to be poroven wrong by medical studies)
Eggs can be a great source of protein for you dog. I agree with Ed, if your going to feed eggs feed them the whole thing, shells and all. But eggs are still full of cholesterol nonetheless. Since my dog has developed these deposits I will not feed my dog egg yolks. The deposits on his eyes will never go away I only hope to keep them from increasing in size.
I have also fed raw eggs for many years with no problems. My dogs won't eat the shells, but the two youngest discovered how to collect their own out of the chicken coop and drop them on the sidewalk to get to the good stuff. Each dog gets 6 free range eggs per week.
I have a question about the shells: We live in a metro area so we do not have easy access to fresh eggs. Our friends who used to supply us with eggs fresh from their own chickens moved 2 hours away, so back to the grocery store we go! I'm a bit leary about feeding the shells from these eggs as they are treated. They sell brown eggs, and even free range eggs which are twice the price, but wouldn't they still be treated somehow to be sold commercially?
HELLLLLP! Somebody help me, they "treat" eggs?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! What the hell does that mean?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?! Do they really DO something to commercial eggs?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
AAaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. . . . .
No seriously are commercial eggs treated with something? I must have missed this in home-ec class.
The outside of the egg shell may contain salmonella.I imagine when Beth heard of treated eggs,it has to be process of killing the bacteria on the shell. This is just my opinion.
