Ok, fairly new to this so I have to ask. I spoke to a trainer in Louisiana who said he doesn't do obedience training with pups because it will diminish the drive of a dog for Schutzhund work. He said he waits until they are older! Opinions? Sounds like BS to me, just wanted to check since I have been doing basic obedience with my dog.
You can do as much training as you want without hurting the puppy's drive, it's true, as long as you stick to MOTIVATION ONLY!
Using corrections/compulsion or any kind of force on young puppies will definitely quash their drive, maybe that's what the trainer was referring to?
I also start training my puppies very young, but I'm careful to keep it all fun for the puppies and not to frustrate them or confuse them - certainly no corrections (they have short attention spans and memories when young, lol).
QUOTE: Acceptable manners at home and in the car and "play" training, like learning to sit for a food reward, with no corrections involved, is advisable. Real obedience work should begin only after the dog is well on its way in the protection training. END
No, did not sound like he was talking about corrections. Although if that was the case, maybe that is why he does obedience training at a later age for correction purposes! Just found it a little odd. And yes, it is nothing more than fun and treats with me for his training.
And yes, it is nothing more than fun and treats with me for his training.
No problems then!
It's actually good to start early; by the time your dog is old enough for corrections he'll already have a clear understanding of the exercises and following your commands will be second nature to him by then.
I'm in the middle of the road. I do NOT do "OB" training as such until the dog is older. I do things like put a word to the acxtion the dog is doing. When I see the dog sit I say "sit" when I see the dog go to the bathroom I say "potty", Some might say this is ob traing ???? I dont get to concerned about training until later. I think for the most part people get caught up in the "look at my dog its only 5 weeks old and it can sit and come and platz" I think you all get the point. Dont be in a big hurry, take your time, enjoy your puppy. I have a dog I did a forced retrieve on I thought I was all that when my dog could bring me anything I told him to bring, In bite work I finally found a trainer who knew what he was doing and could build him up, I do believe had I waited and not done so much until my dog was older my dog would have been better off. GOOD LUCK
