hey everybody.... i just introduced a new puppy into the house...she is a gsd from german lines. she is only 8 weeks old..i have my 1yr old white gsd on a barf diet and she absolutely loves it...my question is this, when is it alright to switch the new baby girl onto a barf diet.. her breeder has been feeding her puppy chow.....???thanks for any help
You can put your pup on the all-natural diet right away. My pups never get kibble. When they come off mom they go on the diet. I don't give them chicken backs until they are a little older - but there is nothing wrong with letting him suck on a chicken neck.
well i did start my now 9 week old on barf the next morning after i brought her home and she absolutely loves it. she scarfs down all types of chicken parts. including thighs, legs,wings......she loves it
I've started my dogs on BARF once a week, just dipping my toe into raw food waters for the time being, plus it's all I can manage right now with 5 dogs and limited resources. And to say they love it is an understatement... I fast them a half day prior so the dry stuff isn't still sitting in their gut. They are always very well mannered at meal time, go straight to their individual places and wait patiently for their food bowl. They also automatically sit for treats. But come the raw beef and chicken, and they turn into mean, greedy little monsters! Growling, snarling, stealing and jumping on the counter. I've started separating them during these meals, but it's a real pain in the butt since this is usually not the norm during meal time. My question is this: Has anyone else with multiple dogs experienced this during the switch over? And although it's not tolerated, will it eventually subside once this "good stuff" becomes a regular occurrence?
Beth,
I read your post and started laughing. My dogs are greedy no matter what but when I started feeding a raw diet (about 5 years ago) I was shocked. They acted like wild animals!!
I feed my dogs in crates anyway so the routine is as follows-get out the bowls- listen to dogs screaming for me to 'hurry up'--prepare the meals--more screaming--carry the bowls to the crates and place on top--more vocalization--I then feed in pack order (most dominant to least). Only then do they shut up!!
They are so into the raw food that if I even touch anything that sounds like a stainless steel bowl during the day everyone gets all riled up!!
So I guess the answers to my questions are "yes" and "no" in that order... They really DO turn into a pack of wild animals. I saw a side of them I've never seen before! Even my sweet princess greyhound who wouldn't harm a fly (well, exaggerating a litte bit) gets in on the act. Too funny...guess we'll just have to change our dinnertime routine. Thanks for the feedback Cindy.
