Hello everyone, Spring has finaly broke in western New York and my year and a half Doberman is outside more, I'm noticing white, thick eye discharge. I have a vet appoitment on Tuesday for his six month thyroid check and would like to know it this eye discharge is normal? On the phone my vet said he would be concerned if it was discolored. I asked if he could be allergic to grass because it was worse when I cut it. He said no. Any imput on this subject? Thank you!

Clear discharge is not uncommon in the spring because of the dust and all the pollen in the air. If it is excessive (like looks like the dog is crying) or discolored it is a reason to see your vet.
Otherwise, it is common for all of us to respond to the pollen with watery eyes, the dogs just can't really rub theirs!

I have to disagree with your vet a little bit- My GSD shows a lot of allergies signs that worsen when the grass is cut. I assume she's not allergic to the grass, but rather all the material that floats in the air from cutting it. She also gets eye discharge in the spring, usually those little eye crusty things...I make sure to clean her eyes with eye wipes when those form. However, being "white, thick" discharge, I'd have it checked out.

My Mal had eye discharge when we got back from North Carolina. I thought it was allergies from being there and it was actually a slight conjunctivitis (which can be caused by allergies). There are several things that can cause it and since she is otherwise healthy and her eyes are good.
He gave me a topical ointment and said that if it did not clear up on it's own to go ahead and use it. It is called Bacneopoly/HC
which is basically a neosporin type base with 1% hydrocortisone in it.
I don't like to use meds if I do not have to.
I ended up using it and it worked well.

I just want to be armed with some info before going. Without going into a long winded reply, I have posted here before with my dogs problems with flaking skin. I have covered alot of bases trying to figure this out, from supplements, elemination diet, etc.etc. Now that spring is here and I'm cutting my grass, his eyes are loaded with white think gunk. I got his thyroid tested six months ago and it showed "low normal" so we tryed the thyroid supps. Now we're retesting to see if he needs to up the dose because he still has flakes. I hope this isn't a stupid question, but my dogs nose looks like its running-is that an allergy symtom in dogs? His nose has fluid comming out. Is this just a normal dog thing? Thanks for the info.

Dogs don't usually get runny noses from allergies because their histamine receptors are in their skin, whereas ours are largely in our mucous membranes (eyes, nose, etc.).
I've heard of sneezing in dogs from seasonal allergies, but if I saw thick white fluid from eyes and nose I'd head for the vet's office, suspecting a foreign object stuck somewhere or a respiratory infection.
That's good that you are trying and re-testing on the thyroid thing. I've had to changes the dosage several times on a couple of senior thyroid-challenged dogs before it was right.

P.S. Thinking back, I do remember one allergic dog who had runny eyes during certain seasons.
But it wasn't thick white goo, and I'd want to check that, as Deanna pointed out. ("Thick white discharge" makes me think viral or bacterial infection.)

I would have to say that I would have this checked out by a vet.
What are you feeding him right now? Could it be possible that she has a food allergy?

Kevin, I just took my young male in for the same thing and I was giving NEO-DEX OPHTHAMIC OINTMENT, I thought I would let you know that in the morning it looked thick and seem to be making his eyes sticky ( the mucus) but all it was was that here we've had hard winds and ,being that all is blooming and dust flying it caused his eyes to discharge. So lately he is in the house when it's windy, not out, and he is all clear. But I think it's just a reaction to everything in the air...
Good luck..

Been away from computer. Not a food allergy. Taking him to vet in a couple of hours and I'll write back.
