Does anyone let their GSD swim in their pool? I had been letting mine swim in my parents pool, but they just informed me that he will no longer be able to swim, due to his hair clogging up the filter.
Is there anyway to get around this? I know GSD's are known shedders, but do you think they could shed that much to clog the filter? I brush him thoroughly everytime before I let him swim.
My GSD "Coach" swims in my pool all the time. He loves it more than my Golden Ret. When I know I am going to let him in the pool I brush him really well with a "Furminator and get as much hair as I can get. I also have it easy because all I have to do is back wash my pool filter and the problem is solved. Good Luck. Swimmimg is great exercise and is easy on their hips
I want my gsd to swim but he won't, he's terrified even though he will play on the first step all day long and when I have gotten him in, he always acts like one of his ears is killing him..any suggestions?
I was lucky in that I already had my GSD (Coach) when we started putting in the pool. I was able to take him into the pool while it was being built and all along in the process. After it was finished I carried him in and let him go. He went straight to the side and struggled to get out. I stayed close and let him struggle for a few seconds, before showing him how to get out. I repeated this several times until I was sure he knew how to get out of the pool. My Golden Ret. (Noley) used to go into the pool to get away from Coach's aggressive play, but one day Coach just decided he would jump into the pool ontop of Noleys head. Ever since then we have a hard time keeping Coach out of the pool. He LOVES it. As far as his ears go you might try plugging them before you put him in the water, and make sure you clean them regularly.
Good Luck
Terry
I turned my GSD on to the pool, now I can hardly keep him out of the darn thing! The pool guy does hate the fur and I think I am strongly beginning to dislike the smell he gets from getting in and out of that thing all day while I'm at work.
Geez, I bought a pool and put it up (above ground) just for my dogs!! ( I get to swim too..lol). All my dogs get to swim, however, like those above I skim the pool afterwards very well. Then the next day I go and do it again. Usually the hair sticks together and it is easy to get out then! I rinse the filters often as well.

Robinn: If your dog has a painful ear it could be infection so you should get him to the vet. Some signs are cocking the head, shaking the head, sensitive to the touch, smelly ear.
Chris: Some dogs actually start to get a little moldy smell because the hair/skin doesn't ever really dry out!
Shelley: I couldn't imagine it either. My GSD's have always been addicted to swimming too!
You could always get a shop vac and use it as a dryer. I just reverse the hose and dry my dogs off with it after a swim or a bath. I also have them sit under a ceiling fan on my porch. That usually dries them off pretty good.
