I got the book " The holisitic guide to a healthy dog" by Wendy volhard and it is pretty good. It lays everything thing out in front of you and presents the information in a clear concise manner. I was wondering if anyone else has tried this method of feeding? So far my dogs love it. It is still a raw diet but you dont have to worry about buying so many bones. I dont have alot of freezer space. It does say that it is ok to feed bones uncooked (thats the only way) and explains what kinds which I think most people on the board already know. let me know if you have any questions
Nate, I don't have the benefit of that particular book at the moment. I just switched back to BARF, and am currently "winging it". I've heard that Billinghurst has a new book out that is an easy read, gives all the pertinent info in an easily digestible way, and that is the one I plan to get when I get my next "dog purchase" (on a tight budget; my husband has his comic books, I have my dogs).
Currently, I feed the dogs RMBs and veggie patties, along with flax oil, apple cider vinegar, alfalfa powder, and kelp powder (alfafa and kelp purchased from Leerburg, I might add!). The Lab gets glucosamine and chondroitin (Osteo BiFlex) since he has already had a joint injury.
I'm really happy with the diet so far (and so are the dogs), but with a shortage of freezer space and no food processor, just a little 2 cup capacity food chopper, it's still more time consuming than I would like.
A recommendation for finding food processers... Check local Humane Society thrift stores. I didn't get mine there, but I had looked at some the week before for like $5-10. Because most people hardly ever use them they are usually in pretty good shape and if it dies you aren't out a whole lot of dough... just a thought.
I caught mine on clearance at wally world for $20.
I also have not read this particular book but can assure you that any raw diet is going to be better than the vast majority of kibble. Do what works for you and your dog and understand the concept of "balance over time".
How recent is the version of the Volhard book that you have? She used to be very pro grains and has changed her tune - much like Billinghurst, which for Dr. B could be from his new product - who knows or cares. Schultze has always been against grains - I do not feed completely BARF but have all the books and have read them. Volhard's book is a good one - some stuff that in my opinion is "out here" but mostly good solid stuff on diagnostic tests and what their values mean and supps and deficiencies and anything under the sun - well worth it in my opinion and a great reference. The version I have of Volhard is NOT big on raw bones - a marrow bone every week or 2 if I recall right. Dr. B and Schultze reccomend on a daily basis.
I have been feeding home cooked (I want to feed raw but Auster's system won't take it right now) without following any one recipe and Auster is doing great. I guess it's pretty close to Volhard or Pitcairn since sadly my mother insists on giving chicken and rice or beef and rice every day. For veggies she gets leftovers or we thaw some frozen veggies and put them through the food processor. Auster's been getting this for 4 1/2 months now.

Nate,
If you want to do a raw diet without so many bones to deal with you can substitute ground egg shells..........I think it's 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. per pound of raw meat. (don't quote me on the amount, but it is something like that) I feed a grainless raw diet and have for 6 plus years now. I do have one finicky dog that occasionally won't eat the raw meaty bones and use the eggshells instead for her.
You can get great nutritional info from k9 nutrition@yahoo.com or http://www.b-naturals.com. I get certain supplements from Lew at b-naturals. (the products Ed doesn't carry, of course!) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Thanks for the info cynthia I just emailed you! I have been trying to figure out a way to feed a modified volhard as i believe it does contain a large recommended quantity of grains. Anyone in west georgia out there I am looking for a place to get raw meaty bones...
There's a lot of people in GA that feed raw and are on the SouthEasternNaturalRearing yahoo group. They might be able to help you if you can't find anyone here that lives in your area.
