Which Dogtra E-collar should I get for my 16 month old GSD?
He is a stubborn little thing especially when there are distractions. So I was wondering if one of the more expensive models is neccessary. I am mainly just training him in obedience, not really protection, if that matters for e-collar choice.
I personally use the Dogtra 1500. My 1 1/2 year old shepherd is a real knucklehead, and has a hard temperament, always testing the waters, so to speak. It works great, and my dog responds at about 30 (dogtra collars go up 100). I use it for both obedience and occassionally, for off-leash walks in the back country.
However, I do wish I had gotten the Dogtra 1700 instead. Why? Because I mostly take my dog for a second walk during evening hours. If you simply want to use it for obedience, but not for walks, the Dogtra 1500 will serve you well. Now, if you want an all-around e-collar (obedience, walks), I'd get the 1700 model. Trust me, you'll be glad you got the 1700 if ever caught in the dark.
Make sure to get Ed's e-collar DVD, you probably already know this.
By the way, my dog has swam with the e-collar numerous times, and it still works great. I hear that Dogtra collars typically last about 2 years or so. I've had mine for about 5 or 6 months.

Edit reason: Spelling
Dogtra 1700 NCP all the way baby! I borrowed a Tri-Tronics and have a smaller Dogtra as well. I didn't like the Tri-Tronics and the smaller Dogtra is OK for my little dog. I use the Dogtra 1700 NCP on my chow who can be very agressive and sometimes nasty (I even use it for aggresion). The settings go from 0 - 127 and the read-out is digital and lights up for a few seconds whenever a button is pushed. You can micro-adjust your stim level to get just that perfect setting. It also comes with a hard case where my smaller Dogtra does not so it's safe when not in use.
I know we always shop for the best bargain but save your time. I think in this case, for medium to large dogs, the 1700 NCP is the only collar I would suggest. It also has the pager feature which, if used, can be a handy tool for a variety of things.
This collar was recommended to me from someone at Leerburg, over the phone, when explaining my needs. It has the higher stim level for harder dogs (Bruno's normal level is 95) and still the lower levels for sensitive or softer dogs (My sister's Great Dane is 40) and any level you will ever need in between. Prices range from $270 - $300 and you can usually get free shipping. I do not work for Dogtra but confidently say you will not regret the Dogtra 1700 NCP. If mine ever breaks or gets damaged, I'll but the exact same thing.
I would have to agree. I bought the Dogtra 1200nc and got a super deal on it, but my dog is also a sensitive dog so it works just fine. I have only had to use 30. If I had to get another collar and money was not a factor, I'd definitely say the 1700ncp. The digital screen is REALLY nice.
I currently use the 1700NCP and LOVE it but have also owned a 1200 NCP and it was really nice. I upgraded to the 1700 due to the digital screen and the fact that I had given my 1200 NCP to a friend who needed an e collar.

Another thing about the 1700 is it has extra power so you don't reach the max when you need to boost the setting due to distractions. I don't have a clue what your dog will need but chances are you won't max your stim level and not be able to control your dog. ie. Bruno's level is 95. With a minor distraction he needs up to 105. With a heavy distraction 110-115 but we're talking aliens have landed and are driving by in the stinkiest garbage truck and calling his name. At that level a nick is all I've ever needed and only needed it maybe twice.
I use a Dogtra 1700 on my personal dog. Cindy uses a Dogtra 200 on her dogs. I like the digital read out of the 1700 it makes me feel like I have more control over knnowing exactly what I am doing.
I use a Dogtra 1600 NCP. I've had it for about 6 months now and have had no complaints at all. Both the transmitter and receiver are waterproof which I like.
