Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone can help me, its been over 3 years since i have had a puppy, and am not sure where to go with her.
She is 4 months old now and is teething at the moment, but has lost her prey drive. should i just put this down to the teething period?
She will chase her tug toys and only bite and pull on them for a short period of time (maybe 30 seconds at the most). Before i could get her to bite and we would have a great game of tug.
I am training her for schutzhund and has come from some well known and proven working lines in Aus.
Any ideas and opinions most welcome at this time.
Thanks

At 4 months on Thursday, my pup is well into teething (all at once!!!) He has 6 teeth, as of yesterday which are in close stages (ie: hole with tooth near surface, baby tooth and adult one there together, or adult pushing through). I am going easy on the guy, even though he doesn't appear to be in *pain*. We are doing NO tug at this time. From what I understand, the pups are so chewy during teething time, and if you're tugging, the pup may pull a tooth clean out and associate tugging with lots of pain...Basically, during teething, it is my understanding to just have fun with treat/marker training, other forms of play. As for the prey drive, go out on a walk and find a rabbit and see that *likely* your dog's prey drive hasn't gone away... He heeee....
I give Cato frozen carrots. He gnaws and gnaws then finally just eats them. Also, frozen knuckle bones. He *really* enjoys those.

Went to leerburg site and was just browsing and came across 'what is schutzhund and found some info.
But please ideas and opinions are still welcome.
My only concern now is, will she still have that same intencity after she is finsihed teething.

Frozen carrots hey! might try that one, thanks.
I am borrowing a friends dvd that she brought from here called training a working dog... i think that should help give me some direction, she is also lending me 8 wks to 8 months.
She brought a lot of the younger dog training ones, but between us both i think we have the whole collection...

I did learn the carrot trick off the board here, but don't recall who mentioned it...way back before I got the pup.
Keep it fun...I just received an email from a board member who's pup is now grown and now it's all just bor-ing...heeeeheeee! Relish the pups!
I have the raising a working dog and a couple others..good information, my next order is building drive and focus...so far, only going off what I've read and what trainer recommends, but I've heard great things about the building drive and focus video.

Hi
I have a Shepherd Pup 6 months old and he has got his new teeth but not all full grown. But he still thinks my arm is a bone. although he does not really bite it draws blood or a bruise any suggestions of how to stop him doing this. He is a good natureddog towards other dogs and people and is not a yappie dog at all. I am new to Shepherd Dogs but have had dogs all my life

my 5 month on GSD lost his 1st tooth on thursday morning..we were doing bite work and when he tugged the rag i saw a tooth fly and he let go...no crying or anything he just stoped for s second then went after the rag again..i immediately stopped and am discontuing bite work until he is finised teething

Oh, and another good one for the teethers, don't know if it's been mentioned before...I just remembered the wet down and then frozen towel trick. By kid really found relief. I'm gonna try it on Cato tomorrow. Towels/rags freezing now
