This isn't for me, I swear. It's for my sister. I wouldn't cross over to the cat world! Her 1 year old cat has developed crystals in her urinary tract and her useless vet recommended Hill's Prescription Diet. After blatently telling him NO! she has come to me for raw food advice. Prior to this problem, she has fed her cats Innova, which has all human-grade ingredients. I have finally perfected my dog food raw diet (for now anyway!), but have no idea what kind of concoction to make up for a cat. Anyone have advice?
Cats are easier than dogs... The clinic I work at has quite a few raw fed cats, and their mainstay is groud turkey. You can also feed raw fish or shellfish, but do your sister a favor and either tell her to buy or buy her a copy of the billinghurst book "the barf diet", it covers both cats and dogs.

A few years back, Discover magazine did an article on pet nutrition. Part of the story focused on the research Purina was conducting on the dietary needs of cats. Purina's conclusion about the best food for cats? Ground up mice. It had all the nutrients cats need and in the right proportions. I guess that would be their version of BARF.
At least they didn't say that cat chow was species appropriate nutrition!
There are sites that offer whole quail chicks, and I know of a good source of ground bone in rabbit for cheap. If she wants to use ground for a little bit first email me and I will send you the contact info.
I think there's a raw fed cat email group somewhere that might be able to help.

Hey Shepzergirl,I noticed you mentioned ground turkey for cats how about dogs? I use Canidae as a base and add ground turkey as well.I'm no food guru so I guess my question is,is there any reason why dogs should'nt eat grnd.trky.too?
Quick question,just let my dog out on the front lawn a sec. ago and I forgot to check and see if the neighbors cats had made their daily deposit. My dog hates the cats but loves to eat their crap! and it drives me nuts!!! why does she do this?? I just caught her in the act and yelled "leave it!!" and she spit it out which was even worse!! As you can probably tell this ticks me off to no end!Please any ideas?
Sometimes animals eat there feces or other animals because they may not be getting all the nutrients they need from there food. Maybe time to try an all barf diet.
Lots of dogs will eat cat turds, reguardless of what diet they are on. "kitty box crunchies" just seem to be irresistable to dogs...
Ground turkey is fine EFC. Ed uses Ground Turkey in place of hamburger for his dogs because he can get it easily and cheap. I don't have a great source of ground turkey, so I just do the hambooger <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
Rock,thanks for the input.I feed a mix of quality kibble and raw,as I'm still not completely sold on the BARF wagon yet,and I may be wrong of course but I dont think a BARF diet would have any affect on this nasty habit.She only does this to fresh CAT feces and there has to be a reason,I just have'nt found it yet.Has anyone else ever experienced this?
