Is it safe to exercise a GSD in the rain? I figured that their double coat and breed standard predestine them to being "weather-proof".
Can the same also be said for puppies? My breeder is encouraging me to join my pup in the Landesgruppen show here in the Philippines in July (my pup would be 5 months old by then), however, there's a good chance that the it's gonna be a rainy show: Monsoon season.

my 5 month old GSD pups love running out in the rain...i just make sure after they are done i give them a rub down with a dry towel and then also spray them with a mixture that i make that helps ensure there skin doesnt dry out...epsecially since my little male tends to suffer from dry skin on his under belly

John, will there be exercise requirements made at the show? As long as the exercise he's given isn't too much for his age, there's no reason he can't "romp" in the rain. Make sure the surface areas aren't slick and he's not doing any jumping over more than a few inches, and not in the mud. I don't remember how old your pup is now, but my pup has slipped in the mud chasing balls and it makes me cringe to see his legs go out from under him. So I take care with the surface he's running on. Even grass is slick when wet of course and running full blast and making extreme turns can make a dog lose his traction.
Other than that, the uglier the weather (rain, snow, sleet), the more the GSD likes it (generally speaking)

"if it aint rainin', we ain't trainin'"
Just a little quote to remind you that your dog needs to be able to do whatever you train it to do (sport, show, sar) in all types of conditions and weather. Get out there and enjoy the foul weather with your dog. Part of the beauty of a GSD is their awesome coat, good for all seasons and weather!

Hi folks. Many thanks for the good advice! The Landesgruppen show requires nothing too taxing in the puppy class: trotting and a bit of some runs. The monsoon rains here guarantee some inch-deep puddles though.
Sandy, this is a new and different pup from the one I raved about a few months ago in the Puppy Forum. My other pup turned out to be long-coated! He's still with me and I intend to keep him as a pet and perhaps still throw in a bit of obedience and working trials as I cannot join him in local conformation and Sieger shows due to the long-coat fault. My new pup is not with me yet, but he will be next week. I still have acclimatize him to our tropical weather as he will be coming from cold Germany. I'm a tad bit worried he'd have a difficult time though, but I'm assured by our local GSD enthusiasts he'll do fine with lots and lots of water, shade and perhaps a few moments in an airconditioned room. My long-coat pup had no problems as he was locally-born.

Hi Edward! My my does your Mojo look so much like my Eisso: they look almost like twins! Yes, I also plan on doing some Schutzhund with him. He has great drives and a sweet temperament, almost confirms the saying that long-coats have a sweeter disposition (maybe due to the attention given them coz they're such big balls of fluff!) hahaha.

By the way Edward, how is Mojo faring with the weather there in Vegas? Is keeping him airconditioned necessary? My local-born long-coat did well without airconditioning (just lots of water and shade) with our 90 deg weather here this summer. It's my incoming pup I'm worried about.

Hi John, yes Mojo loves his AC. Sometimes it's difficult to get him to go outside. It's getting near 100 degree's here every day. He's dosen't like the sun, he searches for a bit of shade just to pee, so funny!
He's doing pretty well, little conserned about his weight, about 35 pounds, chart say's he should be about 45 or so.
How much does your Eisso weight at what age?
Two GSD pups, your a brave man!!!

Honestly, I don't know how much he weighs. Me and my vet judge his built visually and by feeling his ribs and body. He's pretty big and the vet said he has an ideal body condition: no ribs showing, but you can feel it and his skin forms folds between your fingers. I actually had to ease off a bit on his feeding rations as he was getting too round this past week: awesome appetite! He's 4 1/2 months now. My new incoming pup (the one in the picture, his baby picture hehe) is turning 4 months.
