The pack structure should be set up were the dog is never allowed around a kid. This teaches the dog that the kid has a higher rank in the pack than the dog/pup. This makes good sense, but I am not sure how to merge this into the socialization part of the puppy trainng.
I do not leave my kids unsupervised with the dogs. I do allow the kids to play with the dogs when I am able to. I want the dogs to learn that the kids are a good and happy time. I have seen dogs that did not like kids and others that seemed to love kids. These dogs were not trained this way - they just seemed to have that kind of temperment.
I try to put my dogs into as many different situations as possible - water, hard/slick surrfaces, rural, city, etc.. I also try to take them to places that have lots of people such as a tail gate before a college football game or WalMart parking lot. I also never allow anyone to pet my dogs/pups - except for kids. I encourage them to pet the pups, but no adults. I look at this as building the bond with the dogs by any kid because I never want the dog/pups to feel uneasy towards a kid for any reason. And asumming the kid should never be allowed around the dog to teach the pack order - how should I accomplish this?
