Hi guys,
I want to teach my dog the weave poles with the clicker. Does anyone have an idea of where I even start? Any help would be soooooooooo totally appreciated...DC
Mike that's a possibility, but not a great one, The dog needs to drive through the poles independent of the handler's position.
A "channel" is a lot better. The weaves are set up with a dog sized gap and guide wires. The dog learns to run through the channel. The poles are slowly moved closer together until the dog is weaving. The guide wires are removed.
I think some dogs work better with the channel method but some others might do fine with the 2 by 2. It depends on your timing, your dog's understanding and drive and your skill as a trainer.
Here is a short video that shows my dog running through the weaves shortly after they have been closed. I would guess it took about a dozen training sessions to get her running with the poles closed all the way. The wires are still on as a visual for her in the video although they are moved up and out of the way.
Thanks Anne, I'm surely not the expert...just read some things trying to determine what I'd like to do with Brenna. I believe the way I described was eventually you work up to speed without treats...but maybe I got part of it wrong.
I find the leaning poles to be the best method. Start with two poles and use food or a ball as a lure. Mark and treat when she weaves between them. Then add 2 poles...add 2 more, etc. Then gradually lean them less and less each time. I actually space them and lean them at first. Once I get to the point where they are strait up, I move them close and closer until they are in a strait line.
Oh and when you run through one way, turn around a do it the other way the next time FROM DAY one and it won't be awkward anymore!
