Sarah Morris Webboard User Reg: 08-29-2006 Posts: 2324 Loc: Central Coast, California Offline	Well, I guess it had to happen...my 11 month old Lab just had a bad encounter with one or more bees and he is now a nervous wreck I think they got him on the tail...he keeps licking that area...but I can't find a stinger or any swelling. He screamed so loudly (and blew his anal glands to boot) it must have really scared him. It scared me to death. He now won't go outside and he's stuck to my side like glue. I've given him 1 Benadryl and tried to lure him outside to play but he's having none of it. Should I just let this go for tonight and act like "business as usual" tomorrow morning? Or would it be better to play a bit in the yard? Is this even a big deal? His reaction was just SO extreme that it's hard not to feel a little concerned. True

When one of mine had his bee encounter a couple of weeks ago, he was very weird. It was partly the way he acted that made me call the vet and ask them to stay open for me. His paw was red and swollen, but it was his near-panic that bothered me most. He is a calm and kind of aloof dog, but throughout the bee thing he kept turning his face into me and kind of moaning. At the vet's, on the table, he kept his face in my neck. *Never* did that before, and he's not vet-phobic at all. He doesn't seem to be in pain...he's panting (it's hot here) but not gasping...and he is still acting jumpy and nervous. He just screamed so horribly and he is not a nervous dog by any means. He's still very reluctant to go outside I hope the Benadryl helps...is 1 tablet enough for a 80lb dog? True

I've read 1 milligram for every pound of dog, and I've also read 10 mg for dogs under 30lbs, 25mg for dogs 30-50lbs, and 50 mg for dogs over 50 pounds. The first bee-sting must be scary, really, because if the dog didn't see the bee (and probably never read about bees), I guess it would make him anxious to have that unannounced mystery-bolt from nowhere.

He definatley did not want to play that day, I gave him 25mg of Benadryl on site and when I got home and called the vet, she said to give another (he is 43 lbs) The Benadryl will make the dog tired, and the dog will be sore. I have been stung myself quite a few times and can be quite painful for a day. IMO I would let the dog rest for the night don't try to play. Bet tomorrow morning your pup will be more himself. Just watch him for any breathing problems,swelling around the mouth, and remember the drugs will make him sleepy. Cheers
