Is it necessary to wash/sterilize the dog's bowl every single time when you feed raw?? When Brandi was on kibble, she'd lick the bowl clean and I'd wash it twice a week or so. She still licks the bowl clean, but I'm thinking of bacteria being left over from the raw chicken....

I wash my bowls daily, but I have enough dishes for two dishes per dog (the stainless steel ones from LB are great). So at night after night feeding I bring them in, wash them in soap and water, rinse them well and then run them through the quick cycle on the dishwasher with no soap.
Just the way I do it. I am concerned about bacteria also.
On occasion I will be running late and then I just soak them overnight and wash them in the morning and then feed without the dishwasher cycle......

Hi Alex,
When not feeding ground, I don't use a dish and just throw the food on the back lawn, who likes doing dishes?
I always use non pourous dishes for the dog, glass or corningware. My dog gernerally lifts the food out of the dish before eating it anyways. I will admit to having a few dog dishes and sometimes having a couple outside before i get to cleaning them. I have been known to use them twice before washing on occation with no problems at all.
I would aim for washing them once a day, and not using dishes when you can! Especially once the dog is used to raw, I don't think you will have any issues if you forget occasionally
I don't have a dishwasher I just wash with warm soap and water, same as I would wash my own dishes that had come into contact with raw meat.
Welcome to the dark side

I would love to just toss stuff into the kennels....hee hee
But having so many dogs makes that difficult because I prepare all meals in the "dog room" and I need to make sure each dog gets what they need......maybe someday when I am down to one or two......HAH!! I think two would be boring for me......

Thanks ladies! Well both bowls I have for Brandi are pourous.
I have a set of plastic bowls and ceramic. I have been washing them after every meal, but sometimes in the morning it's hard if I'm running late. I feed twice a day. I will have to figure someting out, or just make the time to wash the bowls after each meal. I don't want to go out and spend more money on different bowls. The bowls Brandi has now are pretty nice bowls.
Ha! "The dark side", thanks Jennifer. I have been trying to make the switch for some time now, but things always got in the way....road trips, buy 1 get 1 free on Canidae . There's no turning back now. I need to practice. I will be the advocate for all my friends and family. My bro's English Bully, would really benefit from raw. Plus! I'm in the hunt for a puppy, so I need to have some time under my belt for when he joins the family

Hi Alex ,
I would not worry about it if you skip a wash or two, I do it all the time and well my dogs are healthy and living.
Dogs will hide meat in holes ,bushes, anything they can use to hide food ,sometimes in a hole and covered by dirt and don't come back for days for it.They eat it and live well.Dogs can't get sick from certain bacteria the way Humans can.As far as you getting anything , I think if you wash your hands good after you handle their bowls you 'll live too

I like stainless bowls, but watch out with scratching them when you scrub because bacteria likes to live in the scratches when you don't clean them properly.
I use whatever I have on-hand to clean them, either the same stuff I use for my dishes or if I'm hosing out the kennels I'll spray my kennel cleaning alcohol+water solution on them and shoot em with the pressure washer. For some reason my dogs are always happier when I do it this way, maybe I should stop using Jim Beam for the alcohol... hmm... jk.

I agree completely
I'd LIKE to wash bowls after every meal, but the truth is, I don't always have time. So far, absolutely no issues with bacterial infection - for either one of us. Bless those cast iron dog guts!

I have to confess, I don't wash the bowls every day. I did when we first started feeding raw - I went on cleaning rampages after every meal...but now, I wash the bowls every couple of days.
I'd like to be able to feed in my backyard, but it's not entirely fenced and my neighbours don't all leash their dogs (ugh!).

I think that the more ANTI-BACTERIA soap we use all the time now the more we do harm.We are actually killing our own usefull bacterias.
Maybe Mike is right Jim Beam is what we all to use
