This seems like a minor problem compared to other issues I have been reading, but here it goes. My female, spayed 15 month lab is very sweet. She is a submissive but bold girl, very active, loves everybody. One of her habits is licking, not herself as in hot spots, but us. Every time she is a little excited or high energy and we are near her, her tongue starts flapping and licking at us. It drives my husband crazy. I know licking is a submissive behavior, so I am a little hesitant to reprimand her for doing it as I am not sure if that will make her timid or what. Any suggestions?

Moms lick pups. It is NOT always a submissive behavior, imo. I do not allow uninvited licking.

I can relate to this issue. One of my submissive dogs does the exact same thing and I can't stand it. I rescued her two years ago and apparently she was found by her foster mom living behind an old, abandoned gas station. Maggie is a very sweet dog, but timid and shy, and has done the licking thing since I aquired her. She is an extremely soft dog and doesn't take corrections well. I don't know anything about her start in life and because she was so skittish at first, it took me a long time to win her trust.
When Maggie starts licking, I gently correct her.

Thank you for the reply. Maggie is lucky to have you. It is good to know that others have this problem. I will try gentle corrections with Lexi - she can be skittish, too, and super sensitive to reprimands. Of course, as a dog owner I always end up blaming myself for any quirky behaviors...hmmm, what did I do wrong in her training to cause these behaviors?

We have a 3 yr old lab who licks everything and everyone as well. If I am petting or something and she starts flaping her tounge everywhere I just tell her "nope" and turn away and resume petting when she gets her tounge back in her mouth. It helped cut it down but she has never totally stopped. I found the best way to have her not lick is to make sure she has a toy in her mouth when I want to pet her, she is FT lines so she always wants to be carrying something. Maybe not the best training solution but it is not a huge deal to us.

My lab also does this! She also licks her RMBs before eating them, and she didn't EVER lick the kibble, so she must not have liked it too much!
I don't let her lick me, though, because whenever she is licking, she is disobeying a command. For instance, when I call her over to me for petting, I have her sit, then pet her and give praise. This is usually when the licking occurs. But I consider this to be her disobeying the sit command because I don't allow her to squirm around when she is under command, so why would I allow her to lick me?!
Also, I have been trying to teach her a "Kiss" command, so she can give me this affection at my blessing. I am not sure this will satisfy her craving to lick, though...maybe it is just a lab thing!

Thanks, you are right. It could be a form of disobeying, like squirming to get out of something. I'll try giving her a command before petting. We probably pay too much attention to her, and that could be a problem too. (what are RMBs??)

RMBs- Raw Meaty Bones. We use these in raw feeding. Poultry Necks, Backs, Quarters, and Wings are all examples of the most commonly used RMBs as well as other things. Seems crazy at first, but I will tell you it is much simpler than you would think, and no more unnatural grains for my pup!
Have you read the groundwork to becoming a pack leader? Having a solid pack structure in the home is the key to getting this dog to see you as it's leader, and it contains little knowledge nuggets within that will keep you from making mistakes like over petting the dog that you would have never assumed would cause problems.
