I have to live with my sister due to conditions beyond my control. Long story short. It is freakin HOT here in utah. How hot is to hot? What are good ways to keep him cool. Here is what I have come up with. Tell me if it worked for you or if you have other ideas.
1. Of course provide lots of shade.
2. Fill a kitty swimming pool w/ water before work.
3. I was considering building a dog house and installing a window sized A/C unit in it. Carefully as to rule out any possiblity of electicution to my dog.
Has anyone done this? Any other ideas? How hot is to hot?
Thanks. conserned owner Erick
P.S. I work in heating and air industrie so I have half a brain about this.
PetCool.com used to sell dog house air conditioning units that looked very nice for $500, but their site seems to have disappeared. There are other air conditioned dog houses available out there that are very safe for dogs. Basically the unit has a hose that goes into the dog house via a 3 or 4" hole, so there are no electronics in the dog house, everything is contained outside.
And since I think cats hate water I think you meant a kiddy swimming pool right? PetSmart in Orlando actually has these for sale during the summer now. I spent years trying to find one, finally bought a big one at toys r us that my dog tore up, then I walk into petsmart one day and see nice small convenient ones all up and down the racks!
Hey Erick, your concern for your dog's comfort and well being is commendable. If the dog must be outside then plenty of shade, water and a good breeze (God willing) will help a lot. A kiddie pool would be great too. Good luck!
Thanks guys! Ac units look great! Like the filtration system too! If your coils clog with dog hair your unit will freez up into an ice block. Same problem with the electrical though. (extension cord) I guess I could run the cord in electrical conduit to protect from elements and nibbles. Then again I could do that with the $80.00 unit I already have and save $400 Same BTU rating too! Just not as nice of a filter so I'd have to clean it daily like a dryer lint trap of sorts. If anyone has made an aircondition dog house let me know how it went. Tks!
My sisters kid is TERRIFIED of dogs!!!! She loves dog movies and on her birthday had a dog cake. Dog this and dog that. When it actually comes down to seeing a dog in real life, she looses it. Toatally overcome by fear. I hopfully can bring her 'round. I probably do alot of bringing the dog in at night to sleep while my niece is asleep. I wish it was the other way around. In at day and out at cool night. It's up to my sister if she wants to let me leave him in his kennel inside during the day. She is taking me into her home with a husband and kiddo's so..... Life is kinda crap right now. The only way to go from here is up! I hope I'm sure everything will be fine. My dog won't get to hot and I'll be there for a month. I just want to make sure my dog is taken care of. Moving tomorrow wish me luck.
