Carol and Kristen,
Thanks both for the links they both look promising. I will be moving to NC next year thats why i ask. Now i guess it would be good if i gave a little more detail. And i am hopeing some of the pro's will chime in here. I am in the Military and have been working a dog for two years now by the time i get out of the army i will have 5 years of dog handling experience. And a little bit it training experience (i train my own dog and i am sure i will pass along training tips and help other handlers over the next three years)
Now i would love to go to the Tom Rose school. Well actually if i am going to be spending thousands of dollars thats the only school i will go to now that i thought about it. I am interested in the course for trainers. I am just worried the program is based for people with little to no experience and i will get stuck re-learning a lot of things i might already know. Now that being said there is always more to learn. I would love to go to the local schools or kennels in NC and work with them a bit and get more experience (if i will have the time).
OK to get to the point.
Schools Vs Seminars: After about 5 years of experience what will help you out more?
Sorry about the ramblings.

Next stop.....Ft. Bragg???
I would have to say that I really wanted to go to school and become a "dog trainer", however, I found a trainer from NC actually, and am in her trainers apprentice program.
I feel that I get more one on one time and also handle a lot more dogs (all different breeds, all different temperaments but Bloodhounds and Mals are my favorite ).
I travel to and also host seminars with different trainers as well, and my "toolbox" is filling up nicely. Learned a lot on what to do and learned a lot of absolutely what not to do as well.
I have two dogs that I have certified now with the International Police Work Dog Association and the North American Police Work Dog Association for man trailing and cadaver work. Hard work and dedication pay off, since I have only been in SAR a few years.
I find that my trainer(s) and seminars work better with me and my other things I have going on in my life. I have a conditioning program that I am working on as well and have had people inquire about it already.
It may be different for others and you will probably get opinions on both seminars and schooling.

That does sound good. My main down fall as far as training goes is i have only trained one dog for the last two years and will be training another dog for maybe 3 years so i have a lot of experience and yet not so much experience if you get my meaning.

I get your meaning totally.
Not sure what your set up is, being in the Military may make it difficult but this is how I started.....
I wrote a letter to the Humane Societies in my area, explaining to them my "mission". I offered to take dogs in and train them in basic obedience and also crate training. Cost to me would be food and I would donate my time. Their cost would be vet care unless something happened to the dog that was due to my negligence.
The dogs has to be vet checked prior to me picking them up.
Usually a 30 day program. I then return the dogs, show them what I had accomplished and any "quirks" the dog has and also I give recommendations on what type of home the dog would be best suited for.
This gives the shelter a better chance at placing the dog, gives me all kinds of dogs to work (I tried to stick to as close to an individual breed as I could) and gives the prospective new owners a nicely mannered, healthy, good conditioned, crate trained dog.
It also helped me learn what "drives" were and how to evaluate a SAR prospect. A lot of dogs came in with HIGH drive, but it was due to being cooped up in a kennel environment and once they had outside time and exercise, they turned out to be great pet quality dogs.
If you would like me to PM you with the name of my Master Trainer and a few other trainers that also travel to my trainers farm quite a bit, let me know.
She was actually a Ft. Bragg "brat" and has been in LE since 1987 and has handled dogs since 1989 I believe is the year.
