I have a 8 month old GSD that use to love necks and then about 3 weeks ago she would eat them and then it would all come back up. For two days this happened so I gave her some leg quarters and wings and she was fine. I kept her off of the necks untill 3 days ago. She chewed one and then dropped it and walked away. Later that day I gave her wings and she ate that with no problem. Any ideas on what is going on here? Necks are easy for me to get and are cheaper. Any help would be great, Thanks
Almost sounds like the "Garcia effect". All animals will develop powerful aversions to certain foods if they ingested that food at the time they got ill. Ever gotten so drunk on one particular drink that you were sick as a dog? Or overeaten on something rich and gotten sick, or gotten food poisening on chinese food? Just the thought of that food item is enough to make you queasy. That's the garcia effect. For whatever reason, your dog got ill last time she ate necks and she doesn't want them anymore.
Yes I have had too many beers one night and then the next I did not even want to see one or smell one.
Is there a way that I can re-introduce her to the necks? I tried to give her one with all her other food but she wanted nothing to do with it. Now I have 10lbs in my freezer just sitting there.
If you want to get her to eat necks again you have to change the way the smell by boiling them and pouring the bouth over her food along with the necks. Maybe add some rice and boiled eggs mix it up. This something thats easy to digest along with the neck soup, and I bet she will eat them. I know most people don't agree with feeding a dog cooked meat, but it does change the taste.
The problem would be wing her off the cooked stuff after the 10lbs of necks are gone. Mix all that with some Biljac and she will love it.
Mark,
Necks are mostly bone and NEVER EVER feed your dog cooked bones! That is what makes them dangerous as it changes the molecular structure and they become sharp and can lodge in your dog or perforate intestinal tracts....Cooked meat is fine, cooked bones are a huge NO NO!!
Try smashing them with a hammer and mixing them with some ground meat or canned fish...or put them thru a grinder and gradually add them to something your dog really likes.
I wouldn't use Bil Jac and I DEFINITELY would not cook them, even a little bit!!!!
Thanks for the info everyone! I will try smashing them up a bit and if that doesnt work then I will feed other types of meat for a bit longer and then try to re-introduce her to the necks. I have found leg quarters at a good price so I will try that for now. Thanks again.
