DO NOT use the cattle variety, it is well worth the money to use Heartworm preventetive mede for dogs.....FYI, this is a really touchy subject and the thread could be closed.....if you do a search on this site for Heartworm (newer than one year) you will get quite a bit of info.....
Cattle variety heartworm meds can kill your dog. Easily.
Personally I use Interceptor and all of my dogs have done great on it. There are many people here that use a wide variety of different HW meds and I am sure you will get some replies on what they use and why. (along with some pricing)
It costs me just about $400 a year for 7 dogs. Approx $35.00 per month divided by 7 is roughly $4.77 a month per dog.....(if I did my math correctly)
Until The Tale of the Lioness is told, the Story will Always Glorfy the Hunter
Seems there's no way around the $80 a year for Heartgard. I like the safety associated with a "treat", but hate to pay for packaging, personally.
According to Merial's Veterinary Support Team, who makes Heartgard, the cattle and dog formulations both use ivermectin as the active ingredient. There are genetic sensitivities amongst some breeds and that's a distinct risk. Other than that the biggest risk (and it's a big risk)is improper dosage.

I bought up the Heartworm problem in a thread in June, regarding it being a problem in Belgium and Europe, I did not treat our Dogs for it at the time, But being reminded of it on this thread, i will ask my Vet this morning as i have to take old Dog Charlie' for a Blood Test, as the Old Lad is not well
I will post his reply

I spoke to my Vet about Heartworm in Belgium. He said there is not a lot of Problems of it but he would advise treating, He suggested to use a product callrd MELBEMAX, he said this does all worms in Dogs including Heartworm, but he also suggested to use altenative products and not the same one every time
He had not heard of Heartguard in Belgium but of course as always when in the surgery i forgot to ask about it being more concerned about the old dogs welfare.
Only when i got home did i remember i had not asked so phoned him up
I will treat both out Dogs as a precaution,
as if it is over here in Belgium I do not see the need to risk the Dogs catching it
My GSD is on Program and Heartgaurd. He has been on this for the three years that I have had him and the medicine works great. I live in Florida where fleas and mosquitos are a problem so my dogs must be on these meds.
My GSD, Rottie, and APBT are all on Sentinel. Takes care of fleas and all worms except for Tape worms. I pill per dog once a month. Cost me a little over $11 a dog per month.
Always looking for training avenues close to home. Any suggestions?
