I just saw this online article and wonder what you all think. I doing this with my dog and haven't as of yet. I've always thought of microchips as added insurance for lost dogs.
Here is the link to the article-its long, but discusses that the chips might actually cause cancer
I would say that the remote possibility of cancer would be offset by the greatly increased chance of getting your dog back if he was lost or stolen.
There are cancer remedies. Good nutrition will also help prevent cancer. Mice and rats are also more prone to cancer than humans (and probably dogs) as they said.
Until I see evidence of high cancer rates in dogs with chips I will continue chipping all my puppies and dogs. And I also wonder how many chips they put in each rat and mouse.

My Old Dog was Chipped for over half his life time some seven years, It did him no harm that i can think of,
These things put on the Web for people with dogs to read are in most cases just that to read,
If we were to take notice of all the experts who put stuff on the web and take notice we would etheir not have enough hours in the day to do implement them, or we would have a lot of neurotic Dogs
Just like the amount of Wonder Dog Trainers we read about 20 minutes of Guff, then they want your money and every one is better thananyone else doing the same thing
Take most of what you read with a pinch of salt, it is excatly that. My opinion

I can't think of a better more universal method of IDing a dog that cannot be altered or removed. All my dogs are chipped within the first week at my house. I've noticed no issues and to me the theft of small dogs is enough modivation to put up with yet another thing in my life that *may* cause cancer.
I usually use CAR chips because they're smaller which is a perk with toy dogs, and they don't charge me for updating my info.
Guy goes to college.
Guy gets a degree.
Guy achieves nothing in his life.
Guy comes up with some new theory to feel like he's accomplished something great or done something meaningful.
Millions of dumb people believe the crap the guy dreamed up, because he did a "study".
The End
Penn & Teller did a show getting people to sign a petition to ban Dihydrogen Monoxide (water), tons of people signed it without even knowing what it was. If you can make it sound good, people will believe anything.
All of my dogs have been chipped, and we chip all of our puppies before they go home, too. I've only ever had one dog with cancer, and he's a rescue dog with a hereditary factor involved. I like the chips because they can't be altered or removed; tattoos can.
CAR is a HUGE database. They will keep records on any microchip or tattoo. Many of our dogs have been tattooed AND chipped and CAR keeps all that info, in addition to about six phone #'s to reach us with. No charge at all to update info that changes, only the initial cost ($12.00 or so, I believe). It's SO worth it.
I'm with Mike,
I'll take it all alot more seriously when: I walk into any vet office as a known or unknown with a new dog to 'them' and a scan is done as a routine, when the chip information can be accessed by a one universal reader, when a single data base is used as the record.
Seems to me until these areas are addressed, a dog tag is as good as anything. One is still relying on the good will of people.
