Hi i have a problem when i am at obediance class keeping my 15 month old gsd focused on me and not on other dogs no matter what kind of treats i use he will focus on the other dogs and ignore the treats i am not allowed to use the prong at the dog club. Tom
yes i have used a ball but when doing heel work as a group the dog is just about ripping my hand off to get the ball Tom
Perfect Have you already done the Flinks video on building Focus, Grip and Drive? Sounds to me like you just need to teach the dog that focus on the ball, not jumping and grabbing it, will cause you to release the reward.

Hey Tom .. What is their reasoning why you can't use a prong on a harder dog like a your GSD? Sounds like you need to find a new OB class IMO, if your dog responds to the prong and when it doesn't have it on becomes a brat especially with the real distractions of other dogs ..
You are not getting much if any benefit from these classes. To me at 15 mos a GSD needs the positive direction of fair corrections while trianing. Your GSD just thinks it is a free for all at this class and is acting accordingly.
I would agree that using the prong can help. My 8 month mal has "selective hearing" especially when he isn't starving or when around high distractions. I expect him to act differently around them and I don't ask him to do things I think he'll fail at while around distractins- but there comes a point where he needs to obey the commands he knows whether he likes it or not. It is hard to get focus, even with yummy hot dogs, for very long. But one thing I have found that helps it to correct for not focusing and then immediately high reward for focus- like a crazy idiot happy
I also do not feed him his food in the morning so he'll be really hungry at training. When he's super hungry, food will be more motivating than the other stuff. At this point he doesn't eat out of a bowl at all anymore. All his food is fed as rewards for training and working. That does amazing results!!!

So how does the dog work outside of the class with minimal distractions? When within the pack is your dog acting out possively on its toy?
If the dog isn't learning, Im doing something wrong

Hi thanks for your input the reason i can't use a prong in class is they are not allowed in dog clubs in western australia.my dog works very well in a small group but when it is in a large class he is not focused on me i think i will need to go back to the ball as he has a very high prey drive and the ball keeps his attention. Tom
So your dog works fine with the ball outside of the group setting but crazy for it in the class? Is attention towards the other dogs friendly or wary? And I curious as to what kind of club your joining..............just curious.
Tom is the prong ban only a club issue or is it a part of the bigger picture? I seem to remember reading in your country prong collars are against the law for some politically correct reason down there?
