I think my new dog has allergies. She seems to want to itch her face/muzzle, and chews her feet after we have been out for a walk or hanging in the back yard.
Has anyone had a problem with this?? How do you treat it at home??
She is from the shelter....I've had her just short of 2 weeks. She is being fed Inova kibble or Natures Variety KIbbble or raw patties. I give her Grizzly Salmon oil, extra Vit C powder, and pulped veggies.
The symptoms just seem to manifest after we have been outside.
I know ragweed is a killer for me in the fall as well

Hi, Linda,
This forum is LOADED with threads about atopy. I can give you some answers now, but you will be short-changing yourself if you don't read some of the dozens of recent threads about inhalant/environmental allergies.
Is the dog getting Vitamin E? And how much Grizzly oil per day?
Scroll to beneath the "ads by Google," and you'll see first a very good book Leerburg carries, then an article by Ed and Cindy, and then many many threads on this board.

Edit reason: add some "search" results

Your next two steps after modifying the fish oil dose and starting Vitamin E (which I would do immediately) might be to (1) start rinsing or baby-wiping pollen, etc., off the feet and belly/groin/undercarriage after each trip onto grass. It's not because of contact dermatitis, but because you don't want to drag in allergens to the bed and carpet (and her fur) for her to breathe 24/7 ----- and (2) start trials of antihistamines. I've had good results with Hydroxyzine and Chlorpheniramine. Dogs are individual in their reactions, and some get no benefits, so I try a 10-day or 2-week regimen, see what happens, and try the next one if necessary.
For me, antihistamines have given at least some relief more often than not. They aren't expensive, so for me, a 50-50 chance is worth the trial.
Also, I now believe (from experience) that probiotics can help. Not to overwhelm you, how about if you start with what you have here, and we can go along with additional suggestions?
