Hello,
It seems to me that it would be very expensive to feed the RAW diet. Can anyone tell me about how much a month it costs?? I have a 12 week old GSD and he is growing like a weed and he is on Science Diet Large Breed puppy food now. I'm not rich and I want the best for my pup....

Science Diet is absobutely the worst kibble for your puppy to be on. Raw costs about the same as you are paying..

Jim, Michael is right about the science diet. Of course, this is a matter of opinion though. The raw diet will cost you a bit of $. Not to mention the time it takes to prepare it. My opinion, there are good food on the market for a fair price and are compatable to the raw diet. A food that works well with my dogs is Sensible Choice Lamb & Rice. My GSD has a bit of a sensitive stomach and has done great on this food. My Siberian Husky is also on it as well as my Pembroke Welsh Corgi, which went through numerious foods before finding that Sensible Choice worked for him. Sensible Choice has a web site and you can find a seller near you by using your zip code. Another food you can research is Solid Gold. They too have a web site with a seller locator. Good Luck, Brandi

Science Diet can't be that bad!!!
Yep! I know Raw is better, for me cost isn't a factor.
I still feed Science Diet to all three dogs, 8 yr old GSD and 7yr old Akita on Sensitive Stomach and
the 15 month GSD on Adult Large Breed.
Tried others and have come back to Science Diet. Maybe what works for some will not work for others.
My friend Peter feeds raw and I really like the way his dogs look. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Mine look just as good on Science Diet Kibble. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

If I listened to my previous vet and fed Science diet Auster probably would be dead. It has corn and Auster is gluten intolerant! I'm even talking about the ID Rx food. Instead of listening to what she was told by Hills I spent over a year researching the different foods in my area (Auster is sadly too sensitive for raw after bloat surgery gone bad). Auster gets California Natural with some Wellness, Nutro lamb and rice, sensible choice, and other foods as I find them. Canidae, Pinnacle, innova, Blackwood, and many others are better than Science Diet (which is mostly overpriced corn).
If you are feeding Science Diet you might as well feed Purina ONE and save yourself some money or find a food with better ingredients for the same amount of money.
Raw is cheap if you find the right place to buy parts. A meat shop in my area sells chicken parts for 40 to 60 cents a lb when you buy a 40 lb container. They sell almost everything a raw feeder could want for under $1 a lb.

I have a cairn terrier that is blind and can no longer see his kibble. We feed him Natural Balance Duck and Potato in a can. Has anyone tried Natural Balance? The Duck and Potato does not contain any grain product.

I use the natural balance lamb rolls for OB and tracking (mostly tracking)... The dogs like them and I think they are convenient. The duck and potato food is supposed to be for dogs that have allergies, and much like the rage towards lamb and rice, can be a bad food to feed if your dog doesn't have a problem. If your dog should later develop a problem, you will have to find another novel protein like kangaroo... which can get pricey! When the lamb and rice foods were introduced, people started feeding them to every dog for no reason, which is why you are seeing these new kibbles with duck, kangaroo, emu.. etc.
I feed raw. I have for a couple of years. I am also not rich. It is the same or LESS than feeding a high-end kibble. The biggest factor in the ability to do the raw diet in a cost effective manner is having a chest freezer. I don't think I could do it without it, as the foods I feed would cost almost double if I were buying them as needed at the grocery store.

I feed both my dogs raw meat & bones (morning) & par cooked meat with veggies & gravy (evening).
It takes no time at all to toss your dog a meaty bone or couple of chicken neck's in the morning (in-fact, less time than to open a tin or pour kibble into a bowl!).
I cook for my evening meal & just add extra veggies for the dogs & throw some chicken/lamb/beef in a pot for a minute or so!
No one would normally plan to fail, but plenty of us fail to plan! |

Sorry,
forgot to mention $$'s involved:-
I buy my dog meat on "special" at the supermarket's in bulk & freeze it. If I see lamb/chicken/beef on special, I get the cheaper cuts. But I make a point of buying human grade produce.
However, It's still about the same $'s per meal as buying a better brand/natural can of dog food (eg: Natures Gift etc).
