Has anyone ever known a pup to turn down all natural?
I have a 18 week old male. I've just recently discovered the BARF diet. Definitely would like to get him on this but he turns his nose up at it. He will steal the chicken/turkey necks out of his bowl and eat those but the raw ground beef or turkey he has nothing to do with. He's very healthy and active but after a day and a half of not eating I was getting concerned. I tried cooking the ground turkey just as an experiment. I didn't add anything to it - just cooked it. He devoured it. Now I understand that cooking it defeats the purpose here but can anyone comment on this situation or share any experiences you might have had trying to get your dogs on a raw diet. He just sits and stares at it - like it was barf for real. I know that there's probably very few, if any EFA, and minerals absorbed through kibble but I'm quite certain that there are none absorbed when he won't eat at all. Help.
Some dogs or pups don't like certain textures - maybe he finds the ground beef to pasty etc - maybe try dicing the beef or chicken so it is sort of chunky.
I don't think parboiling the meat is going to make too much difference. Once he is eating it partly cooked you might be able to reduce the cooking time.
You can try searing the meat with a bit of butter in a pan, or some garlic or cheese sprinkled on it. Usually a couple days of that is enough to perk their interest.
I was going to try just that but didn't know if it was really the right way of going about it. I just fed him this a.m. and he did much better. I'm going to try slowly decreasing the cooking time. Regardless, I know it'll be better for him than kibble.
One thing I did notice though, that made me think - I picked up some powdered Vit C at my local health food store for him. I tasted it and it's really tart. I wonder if any of the supplements could be adding a tinge to the food that he doesn't like. I've since ordered the Vit C, Kelp, etc... from Ed. Does anyone know if there is a difference in taste that could effect his eating habits.
I didn't realize you were using all the supplements as well.
I would go to no supplements until the dog is eating his dinner with gusto. You are right about the vit C being bitter. Some dogs never really like that. Later after he is scarfing his food down it won't be as hard to hide the supplements.
I don't think mine even bother to taste their food any more.
