Anyone else get this? (I am sure some do)
I actually love this magazine....today I got the Pet Food Report and (I may be a bit behind) in it was the Top 14 fruits and veggies for your animal.....
Well among the "good" stuff at #2 is Avocados, saying that they are a "good source of potassium and Vitamin A" and among the "avoid" list was, surprisingly to me....spinach and swiss chard saying "contains oxalic acid, a compound that can interfere with calcium absorption....serve with care"
Eggplant, grapes, raisins, peppers and onions of course wer on the "don't" list as well.
#1 on the good list was apples.....saying "the pectin in apple skins is fermented in the intestines, producing short-chain fatty acids that help prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Organic apple contain one-third more antioxidants than regular apples"
#9 was Papaya which "contain papain, an enzyme that supports digestion and is a heart smart fruit"
Looks like I will modify my veggie glop a bit since I use spinach (not alot, but some), although I recall a recent thread where avocado was recommended to be avoided and that apples should be cored? It does not say that so I want to make sure I read that right.

I'mmmmm sssoorrryyy....I figured since I was on a roll today, I might as well post this too.....
It doesn't say not to use it, just to serve with care.....therefore My dogs have been eating it for a year and I have no issues, and I have frozen glop with spinach in there too that I will use.
Then I will back off of it a bit.
It's all good Steve....I am waiting for Connie to answer as well....she always seems to put my mind at ease when I have questions like this.

Maybe it's a "within reason" kind of thing. Otherwise it would probably say "do not feed" as opposed to the gentler "serve with care". Just a guess, though. Maybe I'm just posting for the sake of posting!

On the brighter side blueberries is #4 saying "rich in antioxidants and helps prevent urinary tract infection" and #14 was cranberries which help prevent UTI's" as well.
Among the good list were also
carrots, green beans, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, watermelon, bananas, cantaloupe, broccoli and pumpkin.....all of which I add to my glop at times
They say that finicky felines will enjoy a nice crisp piece of seedless watermelon....( I am going to test that tonight)

Hi, this is Sharon, I logged in just a minute ago, what was the name of the dog wellness magazine? I'd love to look into it.
Thanks
God Bless.

I use spinach sparingly. Anyone who has glop with a lot in it could freeze it in batches and then serve it every week or so. It will freeze great.
That's a list that is suspect to me, with avocados on it.
(Avocados are on every authoritative dog toxin list. Just google AVOCADO, DOGS. That writer should know it.......)

That is what I was thinking, which is originally why I posted, but I thought I's add the others as well........it is interesting that all of the other things were correct......hmmmmmm
My veggie mix is made up in 2 month batches now with one bag od spinach spread throughout the containers. I am thinking this will be okay for now.
I wonder if the avocado is a use sparingly as well, although it does not state that.
Oh, and what do ya know....my cat looked at me like I was NUTS for giving him a piece of watermelon...... but he took the small mackerel I offered him and ran off with it.....

Question on the yams - are they supposed to be baked/cooked or raw? I've fed both ways, but sure would like to know for certain.
Pumpkin, always canned right? Not that I ever buy raw pumpkin, but if we feed cooked canned pumpkin, should yams be fed the same way, ie: cooked?
