Hey everybody, just want to know what you guys do in this situation. You're out with your dog. walking in a park, lots of people etc around. your dog is on a prong collar and decides to act up doing something that requires a correction. You give a correction to stop the behaviour, the dog yelps, stops doing what is was and settles down. Of course you praise the dog, but some busy body who knows nothing decides to berate you for 'hurting' your dog and being mean to it!! What's your repsonse. HAsn't happened to me yet as right now a dominant dog collar works well with Bayley and I have a really hard time getting the prong collar on, so I need the quick release one.
Or, you can offer to the leash to them...which they'll see in about half a second that they want no part of, then you can nicely (or not) explain that they need not judge before they know what the hell they're talking about.
I actually refrain from public encounters w/a dog who will require a correction...but I intentionally don't "socialize" either. If you're talking about a pet situation, I think I'd go with my first suggestion or simply ignore them.
What makes you ask if it hasn't happened to you yet? And do you think they'll like a DD collar better than a prong? Have you ever had to hang a dog in front of someone? Lemme tell you, it's a blast. They all of a sudden forget that the dog was about to kill something a split second before you did it, and now you're a sadist and it's an innocent puppy.
I just seem to see alot of people who know nothing about training a dog and walking dogs that are out of control. Fortunately I haven't had to get that strong with Bayley's corrections yet. I like your advice though. Most of the time I walk her at my home, which is rural and we have places to go where we don't meet any other people. Bayley is a pet but we're working on not acting like the average pet dog.
Ignoring is the best option but it isn't quite as fun as "THE TELL OFF" . I am pretty non-confrontational, thus I have mastered the sneak attack.
99.9 % of these "experts" who pass judgement on you have an out of control dog and often off leash(these are my favorites) where it shouldn't be. The person criticizes me, I act like it is the first time I've heard it and innocently say I am trying to make sure my dog will listen in all situations guaranteeing a longer and healthier life. I then zoom in on their dog pretending I don't know it is theirs and say I don't want my dog to end up like that poor dog, who the owner will never be able to stop if it were to chase something into traffic or try to bite someone(of course their dog would never bite). The "expert" then storms off in a huff but has to come back because their dog won't follow and then they have to chase it and try to corner it to get it leashed up . Ah....retribution..you gotta love it. LOL!!! I am a b****!

Oh I would love to witness that (from a safe distance, with my dog well under control, so as not to have your wrath turned on me)! You ARE hardcore, but you act so innocent!
