I checked the earlier comments posted on feeding green tripe. Great information but I'm not sure how much I should start with. I follow Mr. Frawley's sample RAW diet posted for a 65 lb Malinois. Using that diet as a model, anyone have a suggestion for how much green tripe I should feed in ounces? Following Connie Sutherland's post about adding it s-l-o-w-l-y, ultimately what would be the daily amount and how often during a seven day period? As always, thank you for sharing all your great knowledge

Its really up to you. How has you dog handled new foods? Organs? You could try adding a few ounces to a normal meal to begin with. And then increase depending on how you choose to feed it.
Some feed a little at each meal.
I feed tripe as a stand alone meal about once a week. Sometimes more often, sometimes less. I try to mix it up the best I can with what I have.
Some dogs might have problems with a whole days worth of tripe. Do what Connie said and add it slowly until you know how your dog handles it. Then just feed however much you feel like. As long as it isn't the only thing you feed, do it however you feel.
Part of my reasoning, other than wanting to feed in big chunks that require work on the dogs part, is that it smells awful and I don't want to handle it EVERY day. Your dog on the other hand would love to have it all the time.

Actually, you can feed tripe alone as the only meal for that day. Of course the best way when it comes to any new foods is slowly but if you give your malinois 2 ounces or 2 lb of it , your dogs will be fine. With green tripe you can give as much or as little as you want, it can be a meal or add it to any meals.Green tripe is not a supplement. For very young pups , a little at a time is best especially for weaned pups, green tripe is very acidic and it can make a pup very lethargic and gassy.
I give my shepherds green tripe every Sunday now and as a meal only, but you can mix it with your RMBs.
For yor malinois if you make it a meal alone, I would give a pound of it, 2X a day, after you slowly introduced your dog to it, maybe start with 8 ounces. It won't hurt your dog..

Thanks for the tips! Once a week sounds good to me. I'll mix the RMB's in as usual and start with small amounts.

I asked to my local butcher if I could get the cow bellies/tripe. Here is the dialoge:
When you bring the beefs in do they leave the gut pile at the farm or bring it here?
They bring it here.
Could I get the stomachs?
No.
I would be happy to pay for them.
No. I'm not going there, once I opened them up they'd stink up the place. You'll just have to buy dog food for your dogs.
If he only knew.
I'm sure he thinks I'm nuts.
At least he does let me have the meat and bone scraps.

I can understand him wanting to avoid the stink, because there is nothing like the smell of a freshly opened ruminant stomach.
The thing that I get a kick out of is that he doesn't consider raw animal parts food for dogs. LOL

I personally don't find the smell of green tripe all that bad! It just smells like a cow stall, very faintly though. At least the tripe that I get. I actually have to hold the bowl directly under my nose to be able to smell it.
I find the smell of a fresh beef heart more offensive for some reason.
I feed it as a whole meal. I feed twice a day, meat only meals in the morning and rmb's and bones at night. So I use it as a meat only meal.
How often? For me, once a week or 10 days, depending on how many options I have in my freezer....
I guess it depends on how much variety of foods you feed....The more variety, the less often it might be. If you only feed chicken, then you could feed it every other day, I assume...
Acquiring a dog, may be the only time a person gets to choose a relative.... |

I finally found a supply of raw green tripe and it doesn't smell nearly as bad as the canned stuff! It comes frozen and packaged in 3 lb bags cut into handy blocks for serving. Bayley's first meal she hesitated a bit with the chewier bits but just that first meal.
