The "best" food is different for each dog. The "best" food for Auster that I have tried is California Natural, because it is one of the few that don't give her unbelievable gas.
Some other brands that aren't too shabby (in no order)
Wellness
Blackwood
Innova
Pinnacle
Canidae
Sensible Choice
Natural Balance
Avoderm
Chicken Soup (what the cat gets)
In the end they are all more or less meat flavored cheerios (has to have a good bit of grain to be processed). Some of the cheaper ones just have more fillers, allergens, and various carcinogens.

Well...I am off the Wellness wagon! My working Springer (employers supply the food) was switched to Wellness, thought I was doing him a good thing. It has been over six months now and he has done nothing but gain weight and have soft stools. On the absolute minimal portion of food.
And this is a high energy, very active dog.
And my cat...switched her to Wellness, cost me $400.00 to have a bladder stone removed! Too many carbohydrates! (read=veggies). (and the last thing cats need are veggies).
Speaking to an owner of boarding kennels, has commented on the same, all the dogs that come in and fed Wellness are fat. Sorry Wellness.

Hi,
In my opinion, Abady is the best. The Maintenance and Stress Formula is the consistency of brown sugar and it is a fish based food, and being the consistency of brown sugar it is not a kibble, so therefore dogs don't chew it and that helps with the teeth. Also I will give a RAW chicken back for desert which helps keep the teeth white and the RAW meaty bone is excellent for your dog.

I didn't feed wellness very long so I didn't experience that with Auster. The fish and potato formula has millet so it gave her gas, but she was okay with it otherwise. Thanks for letting me know.

I also feed my dogs a combo of premium kibbles. I usually layer them in a barrel, in random order, until I empty all the bags.So an inch or two of one , then another, then another, then back to the first then maybe another, etc...
The brands I will buy are:
Canidae
Califonia Naturals
Solid Gold( a few varieties, including the puppy product called Wolf Cub)
Eagle Pack Holistic Premium ( Gold or Blue bag)
Chicken Soup for Dogs
Innova
Sometimes canned too. I will mix a 1/2 can on occasion as a treat but I am VERY choosy about the brand. I will use Neura 95% lamb, or Natures Recipe (Venison or Rabbit) Allergy Formula( no wheat) or a brand called Merricks, again all narural ultra premium ingredients. I look around and read the labels carefully, plus I got some info from The Whole Dog Journal.
Hope this helps! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I find that EaglePack is pretty good, and use it as well - currently using the Blue or Purple Holistic variety....Have also used Candidae on and off depending on availiablty...like these two on quality and proportionate affordability. Turned a friend with a 11 year old JRT onto the blue holistic eaglepack, and it is the only food the dog has ever eaten that it does not itch on...

It's Nutro brands for my dogs and they are doing great. They like it. They have great coats. They only have to eat 2 to 3 cups a day of this food (less clean up in the yard!).

I've fed Konig on Nutro Max adult large breed formula in the past, but we recently switched to Eagle Pack for the higher protein content. He loves the Eagle Pack, and it keeps him trim with plenty of energy. I think most of these blends have glucosamine and chondroitin in them as well.

I keep a bag of Innova for emergencies. . .or the occasional bout of extreme lazyness. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
If I didn't feed raw, I'd feed Innova.
