I decided to pick up a crate tomorrow for my 3 month old pup. he currently stays outside in a kennel 8'x6'. I wanna crate train him but I leave him at 500am and dont get home till 400pm. I know 11 hours is a LONG time and I dont intend to crate him the entire time. going home to let him out between those hours is out of the question. I have an idea on how I'd handle it, but I'd love to hear from experienced people who have dealt with crating... anyone? thanks !!

i still crate my pup she is 8 months old she seems to love hers even sleeps in their when it is open and she does not have to be their i would put a pillow in the crate and someone shirt that the pup is used to and get a blanket to put over it and get a crate to fit him or her when they are grown so you don't have to buy another one i would go to wal-mart if you have one and find one their they have a wide variety of crates and give him raw hides though out the day so he does not chew the pillow and put it where he can see what is going on through the day intro slowly to him so he does not freak dogs are cave animals if it work right that should be his safe haven when he get in trouble he will start running there anymore question i can help
I actually am looking at the Lifestages crate with the divider so I can section it off as he grows. total shipped is about $82 with my coupon for dog.com. Im actually looking for how long during the day the pup is in the crate while no one is home. Ed suggests I leave him in his kennel and when I get home in the afternoon I can crate train him then as well as over night. Ed is a life saver !

ya thats what i got from wal mart for my pit they work rel well when i did work my lab was crated at wal mart they are 55 is what i paid for mine about a week ago for large breeds i still so make his comfortable so he likes it i dont work any more but she still go in hers when i have to leave and he is still young enough that he sleeps all the time ya the one i got from wal mart is i guess you would say black metal and it comes with a divider ummmmm she has been in her up to eight hours before the thing i remember reading on a website is year age in month up to a year is how long they can hold there bladders thats how i new when to take her out is i timed it like that so 3 months 3 to 4 hours just make sure if it is hot to have water you will know pretty soon how long he can stand it if you leave his in there to long he will tear up thing that are in there
Not to hijack but Stephanie you say you give rawhides, which is bad enough, and leave unattended? not good advise Collin I hope you search that issue before you think about trying it. Time table for crate is about an hour per month of age. Dog will be fine longer as I have also had no other options at times but could cause some issues with potty training. My Mal is now almost 10 months and due to wife having to go out of town on short notice and me working he was in the crate for 14 hours and all was OK.
wow..14 hours !!I cant even hold it for that long...lol. thanks mitch. yeah, I dont give rawhides. none of my dogs have ever had rawhides. I tried the suggestion of frozen canned food smeared over the hole of a kong and it works great.
the debate:
Great Crate 6000 vs. Midwest Life Stages
I know Ed suggests Kennel Aire, but I dont have enough for that to get shipped to hawaii..hehe Great Crate is here on island and seems to be well built..

Do you have a Kong? A Kong filled with peanut butter or cream cheese or even canned dog food, then frozen, is a very interesting item to a dog and makes him get lots of jaw exercise (paws too, as he holds the Kong down ).
If the dog does need all those calories, then just smear the filling around the hole (inside). The dog will still be very interested in getting his tongue in there and getting every speck of stuff out.
