so I finally got my crate this weekend. I have it set up in the living room. I know youre supposed to let the pup explore and have him go in voluntary before actually making him stay in. he's an outside dog, but Im thinking about having the crate in the house. let the crating begin !!

I leave nothing in mine. Mine are working dogs and I don't want them thinking anything is theirs. I do let them chew on nylabones or kongs and such when I am there but nothing when left alone.
My puppy has a pillow. and a stuffed toy I took the raw hides away. Thanks for the advice but I do give her a kong that i got her. And she is usually content.
mitch, are they ok for a long duration alone? (say about 6-8 hrs)? my boy more than likely will NOT be ScH trained. my family wants more of a "pet" with good obedience training. CD, CGC, rally, those titles arent considered "working" are they? Im really looking into getting the Basic OB and Pack structure DVDs... still debating the drive and focus one...

Collin, how old is the pup. I don't think they can "hold it" for 8 hours until about 12 weeks old.
Check out this thread and the link to a schedule.
I've never crate trained a dog before and after 3-4 days it was painless (noiseless ).
Starbuck will lay inside her crate with the door open. We started out feeding her inside the crate, but we don't do that any more. She has a Kong with treats any time we lock her inside the crate. There is also a small dog bed, it only takes up about half the crate.
pup is now 15 weeks old. I kennel him during the day. when I get hom I plan to let him get used to the crate. he's an outside dog but the crate is in the living room. should I put it outside? I want to be able to have him sleep in it at night. Im mainly using it for a potty training tool. I want him to eventually be able to not go potty on our cement patio where the kennel is. we have a dirt area that our girl goes on. she was never crate trained so I dont knwo how she developed the "dont go potty on the cement" theory... wait I take that back - she does pees on the patio..hmm... oh boy I got my hands full...hehe
