When my older pup eats she growls at the younger pup. What should I do. Should I let her do it or should I stop it. And how do I stop it. Also MY younger pup who is 5 weeks old has started biting quite a bit should I stop it or should I let him do it.
Questions
Should I let her growl at the younger pup while eatin?
If not how do I stop it?
Should I let the younger 5 week old play bite?
Is it ok for him to do it at that age?
They do eat seperatly. But like when they get treats and things. Oh and I got my first toy the blue ho lee roller. I'm so happy they both play with it.
Stephanie,
Your puppy is biting what? Is the pup biting you or is it biting the other pup? What is your end game for this puppy and what breed is it? What I'm getting at here is what do you want to do with this puppy when finished with training? Is it going to be just a pet or do you have protection training in mind?
He is biting me and my mother while playing.
He is going to be a therapy dog. And part of the family.
He is a full blood pit bull.
He is 5 weeks.
What I am really wondering is it normal for him to be going through this stage at this age.
Stephanie,
This is normal for a puppy especially at the age yours is. He's doing the same thing with you that he does with his siblings. This is how a puppy figures out who he is and how to get along in the pack. If you watch a group of puppies for an extended period of time you'll notice them doing the same thing. Every now and then you'll see someone get a little carried away and bite the other one a little to hard. This is teaching both pups something. One of them might yelp which tells the other one that they"re being to rough and it also helps them figure out who's who in the pack.
Don't worry to much about this. If this dog is headed down the path of being a therapy dog, teaching him manners is going to be important. I wouldn't make to much out of this yet but I would begin to let him know that this hurts. Try redirecting him to something else. Sometimes pits can be very drivey so it's just a matter of shaping that behavior into something that's going to be productive for both of you.
