A friend of mine has a 5 month old rat terrior. And she has recently started eating her stool and others dogs stool. Just started about 3 weeks ago and she asked me so I'm asking y'all. Just could this be. It is almost like she gos looking for it when she gos outside.
I just discovered my pup eating his yesterday. I feed THK and this is the first time I caught him doing this. I have a theory as to what I may do to get him to stop.
I put him on a lead and have him follow me around the yard. when he stops to investigate a pile of poop I pop the lead and tell him NO.
is this good or should I wait till he motions to try and eat it?

A "leave it" command is especially effective when coupled with a treat for coming to you.
It works wonders on puppies. They don't usually have the attention span when they encounter a forbidden item to think "hey, wait a minute, I remember investigating a similar item last week which provoked displeasure in my owner. Perhaps I should forego ingesting this pile of excrement for fear of offending him again..."
Whereas if they hear "leave it" and are conditioned to receive a treat for leaving whatever they're interested in and running over to you, they just react automatically.
It's pretty neat how quickly they pick this up too
I use "yuck" in a very displeasing tone. when I caught him doing it I gave him a "yuck" and he left it...he's been doing ok with yuck...I need to touch up again on doing this... thanks though Yuko

Thank you to all I got the dvd 8 weeks to 8 months. And showed it to her her pup is doing a lot better. Thank you this web site is a life savor. Any more advice I would greatly appreciate it thanks.
Hah! No kidding, if I ever caught any of my dogs eating poop I doubt I'd be cooing to them!!!!
(Fortunately I've never had a dog do this, although I have witnessed other people's dogs eating poo. It makes me sick )
And Stephanie, getting a dog on a good QUALITY diet can get rid of this problem in many dogs. Maybe the food your friend is feeding her dog isn't giving the dog all the nutrition it needs.
I know there are raw-fed pups who eat their poop, but I also know of many chronic poop-eaters who have been cured of their problem after being switched to a good raw diet (they used to eat garbage kibble).
Can't hurt to try. And even if it doesn't stop the problem her pup's health will be way better. Good luck to your friend and good for you for helping her out )
