when you give eggs to your dog? I'm thinking I may start to give raw eggs (vs. cooked like I do now), to my pup. I noticed that most people leave the shell on. What's the reason for this?

They do that because there's no reason not to.
It adds calcium to the protein in the egg.
BTW, you don't want to feed raw whites (alone). Also, I limit raw eggs to a couple a week.

Calcium, for one. I wash it off, then throw it into their bowls hard so it breaks. The adults chew it, but I throw whole eggs in a blender for young puppies.

P.S. I don't worry if one of my dogs leaves most of his shell.

Thanks, all!
Connie - I had to laugh when I read "there's no reason not to." It's funny how our point of view gets "stuck" - I am so used to thinking about feeding eggs to people, that it seems weird to leave the shell on. But you are exactly right - dogs in the wild wouldn't take the shell off before eating the egg. (Although that image makes me laugh.) Thanks for your help!

Well, Kori, it can be very funny to give a dog his first intact egg. It certainly was with one of mine, who sniffed it, rolled it around, followed it, pawed at it, and was extremely surprised when he finally broke it and found out what was inside.
He is the same one who licks the shell clean but leaves most of it. The others just crunch through the whole thing.

It took my Bloodhound 20 minutes of carrying the stupid thing around before he dropped it and it broke.....after that he now takes them and squishes that the egg runs out onto his food, then he licks his raw chicken clean before he eats it......meticulous he is.........

The first time I added egg to my pup's bowl he looked at me like I was trying to poison him, now he loves them shell and all. I could have sworn I watched his ears stand a little better and better with each egg shell.

Connie: any reason you limit the egg intake to just a couple of times a week? I ask because I give an egg almost every day together with the Salmon Oil, vitamin E and a splash of ACV.

Probably no biggie at all, but it's one of those varying-opinions things.
Raw whites contain a glycoprotein called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin (a B vitamin). You'll see in a million not-very-authoritative web sites about the horrors of raw egg whites. And actually, feeding them alone (yolkless) in any quantity would be a pretty bad plan. But who feeds raw egg whites without the yolk? It's one of those "part of the story" things.
Yolks are loaded with biotin. Egg yolks have one of the highest concentrations of biotin found in nature. So biotin deficiency wouldn't occur as long as whole raw eggs are fed.
But -- eh -- I just prefer to keep it infrequent rather than daily. I don't know. Habit. Wishy-washy.
BTW, cooking deactivates this effect of avidin. But cooked eggs are almost always the eggs that are the problem with egg-allergic individuals.
So that's why I limit raw eggs. LOL! Sorry you asked?
