I am in a few myspace groups and of course there is always the argument about Positive training only vs more traditional training. I Keep a pretty firm stance that corrections are necessary when it comes to Bite Work. But i was wondering has it been done? And if it has been how reliable?
I'm on a U.K Based web board as well and there is a member there who is hawking bitework using the clicker. I haven't attended a seminar for obvious reasons but a few of the members say its an amazing thing to watch. I did, however see a clip of a Mali in the first stages of bite work with the clicker. Basically what the trainer did was get the dog to focus on a tug while the dog was biting and as soon as the dog went for the tug, the click came.
As much as i fear being wrong (considering it is always a constant fight about it) I rather have the facts and embarrassed then being wrong and someone else have the facts and then me being embarrassed
I would like a link to a sight about Sheila Booth's work?
heh dont bother i just did a search myself and found her Leerburg's books
I am interested in if this can be done with working dogs, although i wouldn't mind seeing a video of her training because honestly, i cant see it. I cant see how a dog could be trained to do bite work with out corrections (unless the dog did not have that high of a drive)
I have always wondered if a bomb proof recall can be taught using Pure Positive alone to a dog that doesn't recall naturally. I am very doubtful. I am not talking about out on a training field where everything is a game for the dog.
For instance say your dog loves to chase rabbits, I can't see there being a Pure Positive reward that would exceed his desire to chase rabbits.
So to come back to the original topic, can Pure Positive ever give reliable results for the majority of dogs if they are subjected to heavy distraction. In other words, can you create a reliable working dog with Pure Positive only? I personally doubt it.
P.S.
I do realize that if you are training a scent dog, you most likely will keep things very close to Pure Positive.
