What a delight watching that puppy Thanks for posting it.
You'll read a lot about motivational training on this forum, just like the video shows. So you're amongst those who train this way with great success.
In case you didn't already know, there are wonderful training articles here written by Ed Frawley. As well as great threads on the forum discussing training.
What is your opinion in training this way? Using this method mixed with using the orbee ball at the end of a quick heeling session.
I want to introduce the heel on my 4 month old pupp, for about 2min and end on a quick orbee ball drive session, about 3 min. I know all this has to take about 5 minutes max due to attention span.
Is using a leash at this age not a good idea?
I don't think it can be more perfect, food for motivational training of anything, including the heel, then a wonderful play and drive building session afterwards with the orbee ball, all with no corrections on a 4 mo old pup. All treat and toy/ball driven training.
I wouldn't use the leash at all for teaching that heel as shown on the video to a pup. In fact, too much chance of unintentional correction if the pup is on a leash. You want the young pup to stay in drive and an unintentional (or worse yet an intentional) correction will do nothing but confuse. Just make sure you're in an enclosed area so pup can't get away. As long as you have a treat in your hand and at the right position, your pup will probably follow you everywhere. Read this article: http://leerburg.com/markers.htm and then look at the picture of Cindy with a Malinois puppy at the top of this page (lots of articles listed on that page as well): http://leerburg.com/obediencetrainingdogs.htm
That's a treat Cindy has in her hand, and no leash on the pup
Dante (the pup in the photo Sandy mentioned) has been trained to heel very much like the pup in the video. He's now 10 months old and has never had a collar and leash correction for obedience.
No leash necessary, or if you do have a leash on it's "just there"
Jose, I don't know where in CA you are located, but if you ever get a chance to go to a Michael Ellis seminar I highly recommend it.
He's in the Bay Area, but he gives seminars all over the US. He uses this method of teaching and is very good at helping handlers put a nice foundation on their dogs.
