I have a 3.5 yr old female GSD from german va bloodlines. She is a sharp dog and it is impossible to hurt her feelings with correction. She has good nerves, I've seen her show some uncertainty but I've never seen fear from her. She does well on bitework but as I don't have a "helper" the best I can do is have her bite in prey mode, which she does well. She hits the sleve hard and wants to ravage it.
Now my question; She alerts on command and on her own when she senses a problem both in the house and in the vehicle. She is very protective of her "space" I have not had luck with her outside on or off lead to get her to bark enthusiastically on command.
When she does sense a threat she will raise the hackles and her bark gets deeper and coarser. What can I do to get her to alert outside on command?? Sorry for the long post but wanted to provide adequet info. Thanks for the great site ED. I have just started looking around.
Pick up a copy of Ed's first steps in defense where he shows you how to start defensive training by having someone hide in the bushes and you having your dog alert and chase him away. You can not do this alone. You should start this training very soon before you lock your dog in prey.
If you have an agitator available you could teach the dog to bark on command seperately. Have the agitator stand still in front of the dog and command her to bark. Once the dog makes any noise have the agitator start with prey movements and give a bite. The idea being to teach the dog that if it barks on command that it will get the prey to move and be available for a bite. I would do this if the pup is too young to start with actual defense training.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
