And that's just how I like her. But really. I'm going to lose an eye.
First, background: Macy is a 7 month old GSD, german show/working lines. Decent prey drive (I've noted an increase in the last two weeks, I hope it continues to trend up) and I'm going to be training her in Protection.
That said, I don't want to inhibit her jumpiness in general. And really, she doesn't jump. Doesn't jump on new people, doesn't jump on me during training (unless I manipulate the prey poorly) doesn't jump at all.
EXCEPT: Every time I let her out of her crate after a few hours of confinement. She is a tornado. She jumps all over me and snaps at any loose article of clothing that may be blowing in the wind. I'm talking, 6' high jumps. I once let her out of her crate while sitting in my computer chair and she literally jumped onto my lap then off, then all around.
I've been correcting this as a pack structure issue (really her only one). I don't want to correct her TOO hard, and I dont' want to teach her that jumping is a bad thing always, but I also don't want to have to deal with calming her down every time I let her out. Or losing my nose to an errant snap.
Any suggestions on the best way to approach this issue?
Thanks!

Trade me dogs for three weeks, I will take Macy and you can choose one of mine.....
(if you choose the Mal, I need the deed to your house as collateral AND you have to sign a hold harmless agreement on your furniture..... )

But seriously, I would take her right outside and play a good game of fetch or tug with her to take the edge off before allowing access to the house.
I ignore jumping unless they put their feet on me, so I may not be the best one to try and take a stab at that.

you can manipulate her through markers, without corrections. My dogs jump (i call it "boing" all over me, at times) but not when I let them out of the crate.
see this page to see what Dante can do when I release him from a sit http://kaiserhaus.com/dante.htm
we go over entering and exiting the crate in the new video Pack Structure for the Family Pet. http://leerburg.com/308.htm
Dante, the canine kangaroo, is featured entering and exiting the crate nicely.

Oh my gosh. That is amazing! What a jumper. Well she's crazy for her tug, so I'll try to redirect her to that. I really can't even get a leash on her for the first 30 seconds (she's only 7 months old, she doesn't really have any kind of access to the house aside from being leashed and attached to me)

JUMPin'. Yup. Jumpin.
What I have done with my pup (yes, jumpy 10 month old GSD) is have him sit before I open the crate. Then I open and wait to release him. It has helped some, in that the ob sets a "tone" for him exiting the crate. ??? Of course, outside and a short game of tug seems to get (and keep) him focused...
BTW, she is a beauty.

And here I am getting my dogs really really hyped up before opening the crate so they go charging around the house barking and growling, OOPS!
Grab some hotdog and do a little OB right out of the crate, usually helps. If he keeps charging out of the crate mindlessly without focusing on the food, just smack the door in his face. Usually you don't even have to touch the dog with the crate door, just seeing it slam in front of them is enough. It'll slow them down enough to be a little more attentive when they do come out.
